Water treatment company Clean TeQ (CLQ) has completed a nitrate removal trial in China for a Chinese wastewater treatment company.

The trial aimed to demonstrate the cost effectiveness of Clean TeQ’s BIONEX system to reduce nitrate levels in wastewater and meet China’s increasingly strict rules around wastewater disposal.

The completion of this trial has provided Clean TeQ with confirmation of the efficacy of its technology in the Chinese nitrate removal market. The trial also confirmed that BIONEX can eliminate nitrate at a very low cost.

BIONEX is a system which utilises ion exchange resins to extract nitrate from wastewater streams into a highly-concentrated, nitrogen-rich brine product.

The brine is then treated with Clean TeQ’s BIOCLENS encapsulated bacteria technology which converts the nitrate into harmless nitrogen gas.

The bacteria are encapsulated in polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) polymer in the shape of a lens. The shape and size of the lens are critical as they ensure maximum biological activity while protecting the bacteria from harmful environmental conditions.

According to the company, BIOCLENS offers advantages in wastewater treatment application due to the bacteria’s ability to break down and remove harmful nitrates and ammonia from wastewater.

Nitrate water pollution can lead to eutrophication (the excessive plant and algal growth) of natural water bodies, which harms water quality. Nitrate in drinking water has also been linked to ‘blue baby syndrome’ and, increasingly, to various cancers. As a result, there are strict nitrate limits for wastewater treatment plants around the world.

Traditional nitrate removal plants use bacteria to break down nitrate in wastewater. While the systems are suited for removing high concentrations of nitrate, they’re often not able to meet the strictest nitrate concentrations which are required for disposal of water into sensitive environments.

Clean TeQ is promoting its technologies across two more demonstration trials that are expected to begin in China over the next few weeks. The company is also negotiating with multiple parties who are interested in implementing BIONEX and BIOCLENS in their projects.

Furthermore, Clean TeQ is working with U.S. parties to introduce BIONEX for removing nitrate from ground water sources of drinking water.

Company shares are trading flat at 30 cents in early afternoon trade.
