The Electric Age: 2022 Lucid Air Dream First Drive Reaches 1,111hp

A luxury sedan is a safe bet to make for savvy buyers. You’re spoilt for options from a long list of established manufacturers.

For an all-electric luxury sedan, however, there’s really only been one name consistently synonymous with the market share, Elon Musk’s powerhouse Tesla.

According to Statista, Tesla’s Model 3 was the leading electric vehicle model in the United States in 2020.

This year however the Lucid Air Dream Edition, described as “Tesla’s living nightmare,” is looking to give buyers another luxury electric sedan option – and it’s already claimed MotorTrend’s ‘2022 Car of the Year’ last November.

The 2022 Lucid Air is a bet on a brand, technology and this California start-up itself. While it’s too early to predict the company’s long-term future, billions of dollars in funding and a brand-new, $700 million factory in Arizona notwithstanding, the future of the car itself certainly looks bright.

The California-based manufacturer’s first flagship model beat out 24 competitors from major manufacturers marking the first time an initial product from a new automotive company has taken the top award.

So let’s delve a little deeper into the car that Forbes describes as a “Landmark of the coming electric age,” and a “breathtaking achievement in electric design, tech and performance.”

The Lucid Air Dream Edition comes in two limited production models – the ‘Dream Edition P,’ optimised for speed and acceleration and the ‘Dream Edition R,’ maximised for range.

Both models have dual motors, all-wheel-drive transmission, a top speed of 270km/h and prices starting around A$236,550.

The range-topping model, the ‘Dream Edition R’ treats owners to an ‘industry-leading 800+ kilometres of range’ – that’s the longest-ranging EV in automotive history.

In danger of reaching an accolade overload, the Lucid Air also becomes the industry’s fastest-charging EV, adding approximately 483km in 20 minutes albeit via a 350-kilowatt fast charger.

Clearly, this car is more than hype. Reservations are already exhausted with Lucid saying ‘customer reservations now exceed 25,000, reflecting potential sales of more than A$3.79 billion’ – co-founder of Apple, Steve Wozniak can count himself one of the lucky owners.

Performance-wise, it’s no surprise the more powerful 1,111hp ‘Dream Edition P’ is fast.

Power comes courtesy of the Lucid Electric Advanced Platform which they say is a ‘groundbreaking, space-saving design’ and launches the car from 0-100km/h in just 2.5 seconds – the Range model will still manage it in around 2.7 seconds.

You may think all this speed comes at the sacrifice of design, it doesn’t.

The Lucid Air Dream Edition is everything you’d want in a high-style luxury sedan. Its stunning teardrop-shaped body is crafted in aluminium crowned with a “Glass Canopy” set of panels providing a spacious feel on the inside yet blocking heat and sunlight from the outside.

The Lucid Air also mingles among the world’s most aerodynamic sedans where sleek styling, inspired by the elegant shape of aircraft, ensures a 0.21 coefficient of drag.

Even the smallest details are well-thought-out from an exterior shrouded in clean lines and elements resembling a flowing fluid form to the inside that’s a seamlessly minimalist affair.

The interior cabin is home to ultra-luxe features such as a clear 21-speaker sound system, a curved 34-inch 5K display and massaging seats.

Interior trim options feature a plethora of materials including Nappa leather, synthetic PurLuxe, alpaca wool, recycled yarns, sustainably sourced eucalyptus and open-pore walnut.

The choices continue with the seating arrangement – comfortable room for three adults is standard or opt for the Executive Rear Seating Package that offers a jet-style experience for two.

The downside? The American company ‘doesn’t have a timeline yet for right-hand-drive markets, like Australia,’ so it may be a little longer before we see them down under.
