5 Ways To Drink A French Martini

The ‘Traditional’ French Martini is a flamboyant mixup of vodka, Chambord and pineapple juice. The simple three-ingredient French martini has the taste of sweet raspberries and tart pineapple against a vodka background. The modern French martini was created in the late 1980s and is attributed to the New York City bars owned by restauranteur Keith McNally. By the mid-’90s, it appeared on martini menus worldwide and had become an essential cocktail in the modern martini craze of drinks that resemble the original martini (sometimes in glassware alone). It has remained a favorite favourite so long because its flavour can appeal to anyone and it is, quite simply, the ideal fruity vodka martini.

The French Martini

Chambord liquor is the crucial ingredient to a proper French martini – it is in fact what makes the martini ‘French’. Chambord, a type of black raspberry liqueur produced in the Loire Valley, is made from a mix of raspberries, blackberries, XO cognac, Madagascan vanilla, Moroccan citrus peels and honey.

To Make this You Will Need:
  • 60ml vodka
  • 15ml Chambord
  • 45ml cloudy pineapple juice
  1. Measure the vodka, Chambord and pineapple juice into a cocktail shaker. Add a couple of handfuls of ice. Put the lid on and shake it up. Remove the ice blocks and strain it into a martini glass.
  2. Garnish with fresh raspberries or pineapple if desired.

The Sparkling French Martini

While almost identical ingredients to the traditional French Martini, the Sparkling French Martini has an added splash of champagne or prosecco added to the mix. A light and fruity take on the traditional cocktail – perfect for the warmer months.

To Make this You Will Need:
  • 60ml vodka
  • 15ml Chambord
  • 45ml pineapple juice
  • Splash of champagne
  1. Measure the vodka, Chambord and pineapple juice into a cocktail shaker. Add a couple of handfuls of ice. Put the lid on and shake it up. Strain it into a martini glass.
  2. Top with the sparkling wine and garnish with fresh raspberries or pineapple if desired.

Mix up this martini with Chambord liqueur. You can also customise the cocktail by using vanilla vodka, or by adding a splash of champagne or prosecco.
