A Legendary Spirit: The Story of Don Julio 1942

Don Julio is a legendary name in the tequila industry. Being the producer of some of the most expensive tequilas on the market today, the brand is synonymous with quality and good taste. Don Julio currently produces six highly renowned tequilas, but it’s the Don Julio 1942 that really captures the brand and its story.

Named after the year that the brand founder, Don Julio González himself, began making his own tequila, the bottle is a tribute to the brand’s history. Don Julio was only 17 years old when he began producing the spirit. With no money of his own, he decided to share his concept with a local businessman and was successfully granted an investment to build his tequila distillery.

The distillery was officially named Primavera – which translates to springtime in Spanish. As regulations require all authentic tequila to be produced in Mexico, Don Julio’s tequila is produced in one of the countries most fertile blue agave regions of the country, the Highlands of Jalisco. The region’s microclimate and mineral-rich red clay soil result in thriving blue agave plants, which are left to mature for over ten years before harvest. This technique provides the mellow and developed blue agave taste the tequila is so appreciated for.

Don Julio has constantly favoured quality over quality, with each agave plant spaced apart to allow for the room to grow and mature. Carrying on the legacy of the founder – who spend over 40 years refining the process of his tequila production – Don Julio guarantees each agave portion is handpicked so that they only harvest the best agave possible.

For this reason, Don Julio 1942 is intentionally created in small quantities. To make the tequila, the piñas are hand-cut into thirds and quarters, before being slowly steam-cooked in traditional masonry ovens for up to three days in order to release the sweet agave juice.

Ensuring that the spirit is handcrafted, double-distilled and aged for a minimum of two and a half years results in the bottle that we know as Don Julio 1942. With the decadent notes of rich caramel, chocolate, warm oak. vanilla and roasted agave, the tequila offers a lingering oak and warm vanilla finish. The indulgent taste of the spirit means that it’s often chosen as the starring tequila in exclusive bars, nightclubs and restaurants around the world. Costing around A$195.00 per 750ml bottle, Don Julio 1942 is a high-end tequila choice for any occasion.
