A Look at Sir Elton John’s Impressive Property Portfolio

On top of being recognised as one of the best-selling artists of all time, Sir Elton John is also a collector of lavish properties. Over the last nearly 50 years, the ‘Rocket Man’ has amassed a significant real estate portfolio spanning properties in England, France and America.

True to his flamboyant persona, he favours a maximalist style telling Architectural Digest in a May 2000 interview: “And more is good… A lot more is very good”.

The property pursuit started in 1974 with the purchase of a classic English country estate in Berkshire, England dubbed ‘Woodside’. Over the years, John has snapped up other properties in Europe including a summer villa in Nice, France and an apartment in Venice. In America, the music megastar owns a high-rise condo in Atlanta and two mansions in Beverly Hills.

Let’s take a look inside Elton John’s impressive list of eclectic properties.

Woodside Estate – Berkshire, England

Riding high on the release of his 1973 album Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Elton John purchased this classic English country estate for about A$706,000 in 1974. Not far from Queen Elizabeth II’s royal Windsor Palace, the estate features eight regal bedrooms, tennis courts, a library, a restored 18th-century orangery, and a chapel. Throughout the traditional interiors and gorgeous 35-acre gardens, the estate has played host to many of the singer’s famous parties and banquets.

1920s Villa – Nice, France

While an exact date is unclear, Elton purchased this lavish 1920s villa in Nice, France some time in the 1990s. The beautifully ornate property was outfitted by designers Fred Dilger and Monique Gibson and filled with significant art and china collections including multiple Andy Warhols with one above Elton’s own bed. While the villa was purchased as the star’s summer home, the residence has hosted many famous guests from one-off parties and events to even hosting Prince Harry and Meghan Markle for a vacation in 2019. On top of the grand house itself, the estate also boasts a pool surrounded by Egyptian Deco statues, lush gardens and a tower room overlooking the Mediterranean.

Atlanta Condo – Atlanta, Georgia

Heading stateside, Elton John first settled on a high-rise condominium in Atlanta on the 36th floor of an apartment building. The over 557 square metre duplex is a very opulent affair featuring chandeliers, extravagant mirrors, black granite, Daum vases and works by Willem de Kooning among others. Designed by Stan Topol and Fred Dilger, the home combines two apartments into a thoroughly contemporary space with Dilger reportedly noting, “We looked to comfort first and to charisma that delights the senses”.

Los Angeles Mansion – California, United States

Elton John’s Trousdale Estates property in Los Angeles is in fact two neighbouring homes combined. The musician and husband David Furnish purchased the first Beverly Hills home for approximately A$10.5 million in 2012 as a comfortable base on the west coast for the couple and their expanding family.

Built in 1966, the Trousdale Estates property was decorated by Martyn Lawrence Bullard who filled the modernist home with colour, texture, and iconic artwork. Elton made headlines in 2021 when he secured the neighbouring home for just over A$12.2 million – the two properties combine for around 1,000 square metres of space.

Venice Apartment – Venice, Italy

When the music star wants an Italian holiday, he simply travels to his lavish property in the floating city of Venice. Elton owns an apartment in a 17th-century palazzo on the island of Giudecca with water views out to San Marco. Featuring Gothic-style windows and a terrace, specific details of this home are hard to come by but Elton’s love for the area is widely known, with the music star having spent long periods in the Italian city.
