It’s no wonder people are prepared to pay a small fortune for a wonderful slumber. From a mattress owned by Swedish royalty to a floating masterpiece worth almost A$2.2 million, here are some of the most expensive mattresses in the world.

Magnetic Floating Bed

Price: Almost A$2.2 million

This modern mattress creation hovers approximately 16 inches off the ground suspended by a magnetic system. Designed by Dutch architect Janjaap Ruijssenaars, the mattress is inspired by the Monolith from Kubrick’s movie 2001 A Space Odyssey. Janjaap spent seven years developing the magnetic support system that aims to defy standard architecture dictated by gravity.

No matter where you live, all architecture is dictated by gravity. I wondered whether you could make an object, a building or a piece of furniture where this is not the case — where another power dictates the image.
