Billionaire Bunkers: Inside the World’s Most Luxurious Doomsday Dugouts

Survivalism – the social practice of proactively preparing for a disaster.

While this tends to conjure up an image of camping in the woods and bunkers lined with tinned food – more recently the trend has hit the high-end of society.

“Your father or grandfather’s bunker was not very comfortable,” says Robert Vicino, CEO of Vivos, a company that builds and manages high-end shelters around the world.

Nowadays for the mega-rich, ‘prepping for doomsday’ resembles – sleeping pods and suits, wine cellars, indoor pools and helicopter pads. Many of the world’s elite, including hedge fund managers, sports stars and tech executives (Bill Gates is rumoured to have bunkers at all his properties) have chosen to design their own secret shelters to house their families and staff. Here is a look at some of the best billionaire bunkers.

Vivos Europa One

Location: Germany

Safe, secure and with no sacrifice on luxury living – ‘the world’s ultimate Doomsday escape,’ in Rothenstein, Germany is an almost A$1.5 billion complex. Vivos Europa One is a converted Cold War bunker spanning 76 acres above and below ground. Carved from bedrock and buried deep within a limestone mountain, the luxury compound can withstand a nuclear explosion, flooding, earthquakes and bio attacks.

The community amenities on offer rival most small towns. Future residents will be able to access a medieval-style chapel, a micro-brewery, a mini-museum and a zoo. The invitation-only customisable quarters will sell for almost A$8 million each with private swimming pools, movie theatres, aquariums and gyms available at the owner’s request. The luxe living chambers include deluxe ensuite bathrooms and wetrooms, as well as a gourmet kitchen that can all be designed with marble, polished wood finishes and leather upholstery.

The Oppidum

Location: Czech Republic

The Czech-Soviet collaboration established in 1984, The Oppidum is sprawled over 30,000sqm above and below ground. Topside, the complex is more like a luxury sanctuary fitted with a golf course, helipad and more surrounded by lush countryside.

Below ground, The Oppidum is one of the most prosperous subterranean shelters. The communal spaces include everything residents could ever need. Fitted with an underground swimming pool and garden with lights that simulate natural lighting. There’s a gym, bar, nightclub, movie theatre, a billiards room and an extensive library. Furthermore, a treatment spa provides a place to relax and if it’s business as usual, then there’s a conference room ready for action.

The living spaces resemble a suite in the finest five-star hotel – high-end furnishings, cutting-edge entertainment facilities and bedrooms with virtual window panels. Each apartment also has an ensuite bathroom, complete with a whirlpool bath, rainfall shower and double sinks.

Maybe the most intriguing aspect of this doomsday bunker is the password-protected online portal that only the wealthiest are permitted to access.

Survival Condo

Location: USA

Condos at this refurbished Atlas F nuclear missile silo, start at almost A$2.4 million for an 85sqm space and rise to $7.1 million for a 334sqm penthouse. Inside the condos, residents will find massage chairs, 50inch TVs and virtual windows projecting the outside. Each luxury suite has a fully furnished kitchen with sinks, taps and appliances, as well as a private bathroom.

The facility functions as a subterranean city. A hydroponic farm cultivates fresh fruit and vegetables and aquaculture tanks are available to raise fish. The complex has educational amenities such as a library and classrooms for children.

With more leisure facilities than most retreats, residents can enjoy activities such as the climbing wall, the gym, a movie theatre and a tropical-themed swimming pool with waterfalls and a fun slide. If that’s not enough, the Survival Condo also caters to owners of four-legged friends with a full-sized dog park.

The Aristocrat

Location: Texas

This A$11.3 million underground mansion is the workmanship of Texas-based, Rising S Bunkers. The most luxurious floor plan they offer is The Aristocrat – which takes the idea of a luxury underground shelter to a whole another level.

The list of customisable amenities is practically limitless. Owners can include everything from game rooms, a sauna and a fitness centre right through to a bowling alley and gun range. The steel bunkers also come with a variety of protective add-ons including escape tunnels, hidden doors and bullet-proof glass.

Inside, The Aristocrat is personalised to each customer. Everything from the flooring to the kitchen is designed for comfort. Carpets and wooden flooring can match with beautiful cabinetry and stone countertops. Private bathrooms join master bedrooms that open onto dining rooms with solar lighting – it’s all tailored to the occupant’s desires. If keeping a fleet of sports cars safe is a necessity, a multi-vehicle garage with a motor cave is an option. As is a greenhouse capable of producing sustainable food sources.
