Celebrate Chinese New Year in Sydney

After a long year, Sydney has emerged and is ready to celebrate 2022. Chinese New Year is one of the first big events to hit the city and Sydney isn’t holding back. From a dazzling fireworks display over Darling Harbour to food markets, demonstrations and specially curated Chinese New Year menus, The Year of the Tiger is going to be a big one.

Darling Harbour Fireworks 

Welcome the Year of the Tiger with the exciting Darling Harbour fireworks display. Setting off at 9 pm, the fireworks will be visible all along the harbour’s edge. This means that you book a table at one of the harbour’s waterside restaurants and catch the fireworks display while you eat.

Lunar New Year Uncaged 

This year, Sydney is going all out for Chinese New Year and this 14-day festival is going to be the centre of the festivities. Set between the Darling Harbour and Chinese Garden, the extensive calendar of events will see art installations, mahjong tournaments, tea tastings, brush painting demonstrations, zodiac readings and lion dance performances.

Lunar New Year Dumpling Masterclass at The Gardens by Lotus

If you have always wanted to know how to make the delicious Chinese treat then you need to sign up for The Lunar New Year Dumpling Masterclass at the Gardens by Lotus. The two-hour-long session will teach you how to make three different types of dumplings, including chicken sui mai, mushroom spring rolls and a special Lunar New Years dumpling.

Lunar New Year at Blu Bar on 36

This Chinese New Year, The Shangrila Sydney’s Blu Bar on 36 is the place to celebrate. For two weeks, you have the chance to sample Chinese-themed cocktails alongside a decadent share plate menu made up of BBQ pork buns, seared scallops and roast duck with egg noodles. With sweeping views over the Sydney Harbour, Blu Bar on 36 is bringing in the Year of the Tiger in style.

Chatswood Year of the Tiger Festival 

One of Sydney’s biggest Chinese New Years events is taking place in Chatswood. The highly anticipated festival will be set across multiple Chatsworth venues with everything from a one-night comedy festival to a free outdoor concert series on offer. Alongside art exhibitions and performances, you will also be able to attend a traditional Asian food market with food from China, Korea, Japan and Taiwan.
