Chanel, Tom Ford and the Luxury Lipstick Wars

For those of us committed to the best quality – high-end lipsticks are an absolute must, and we’re more than happy to flash the cash for the best lip products on the market. But with all the incredible luxury lip products out there, and several companies competing to be the best in beauty, who is winning the upscale in the lipstick war?

Our beauty editors put the brands to the test and we consider the top luxury brands in the lipstick department to be Chanel, Gucci, Dior, Tom Ford and YSL. These are all well-established and wildly successful signatures. But which upscale brand reigns supreme in the luxury lipstick game? Let’s take a closer look at the lipstick offerings of these high-end heavyweights.

When it comes to lipsticks, Chanel is the old-time preference. Who doesn’t have a Chanel red lipstick in the classic colour Pirate? Chanel, which is certainly one of the most respected beauty brands in the world, markets toward younger women, while retaining an element of sophistication, elegance and luxury in all its products.

Chanel’s demographic is aimed at modern women with an investment for classic shades. With a range of favourable colours to choose from, you should take inspiration from Coco Chanel’s own words: “The best colour in the whole world is the one that looks good on you.” Chanel lipsticks range from A$56 and up.

Gucci – This iconic brand has not traditionally been known for its makeup collection, however, Gucci has upped its game, launching a lipstick collection last year to rave reviews.

The ad campaign for the new collection caused quite a stir, with mysterious imagery used in its ad campaign. Gucci is quickly developing a reputation for tested and true shades and innovative formulas. Wrapped in classic gold packaging, Gucci’s range of 50+ lipsticks, with our top pick being the Goldie Red Matte Lipstick – priced at A$57 a pop.

Dior is a tried and tested supplier of an excellent range of upscale lipsticks. For many, the word “Dior” is compatible with luxurious cosmetics, with average prices for lipsticks starting at around $56. When Christian Dior created the makeup giant’s first Rouge Dior lipstick in 1953, he wanted to “dress a women’s smile.” Our pick is the Dior Ultra Care Range in the colour Bloom. Long-lasting and hydrating.

All these years later, this beautiful ambition is still very much prevalent at Dior. The cosmetics Dior produces are bold, feminine and classic. T\

Yves Saint Lauren is a leader in innovative and exciting colour options, with a huge range of colours available for those looking for the perfect statement lip shade.

With lipsticks selling for around A$60, YSL is slightly more competitive than some of its rivals – but the price tag does not entail a downgrade in quality or effect. Our favourite? Rouge Volupte Shine, perfect for a bold look for the evening.

Upscale brand Tom Ford has in recent years made an effort to build its beauty business, releasing a string of innovative cosmetic collections. Tom Ford quickly became a big player in the global luxury beauty space.

In terms of lipsticks, the high-end brand is known for its comprehensive range of creative colours and its nourishing, silky formulas. With lipsticks offered in a range of prices starting at around $72 – the price point is slightly dearer compared to the rest. Our pick, the bold and bright – Dressed to Kill colour.Perfect for the day or night.
