Could Warhol’s Marilyn Painting Become the Most Expensive 20th Century Artwork?

Estimated to sell for around A$270 million, Andy Warhol’s iconic Marilyn painting is poised to be the most expensive 20th century artwork to sell at auction.

Set to lead Christie’s 20th and 21st Century Art week in May, Shot Sage Blue Marilyn comes from children’s charity, the Thomas and Doris Ammann Foundation Zurich. All proceeds of the extraordinary sale will benefit the charity which is dedicated to providing healthcare and educational programs across the world.

According to Christie’s, the sale will become the highest-grossing philanthropic auction since The Collection of Peggy and David Rockefeller in 2018.

The 1964 painting measures 40 by 40 inches and is one of five Marilyn paintings Warhol created in his signature pop art style.

The most significant 20th century painting to come to auction in a generation, Andy Warhol’s Marilyn is the absolute pinnacle of American Pop and the promise of the American Dream encapsulating optimism, fragility, celebrity and iconography all at once.

Alex Rotter, Christie’s Chairman of 20th and 21st Century Art

Likening the piece to Botticelli’s Birth of Venus and Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, Christie’s Chairman of 20th and 21st Century Art, Alex Rotter, called the auction a once in a generation opportunity.
