Daring Designs: The Balenciaga Bag

Balenciaga is known for producing daringly creative designs. Since its founding in 1917 by Cristóbal Balenciaga, the luxury Spanish fashion house has produced some of the world’s most recognisable and industry shaping handbags. The house’s current collection is filled with such an array of enviable archival and contemporary designs that it’s hard to choose which bag you want most. To make it easier, we’ve put together a guide to the best Balenciaga bags that you can buy.

The Balenciaga City

The City bag first made waves in the early 2000s when Balenciaga creative director, Nicolas Ghesquière, introduced the handbag as the motorcycle bag. While the designed was initially dismissed by the company, Ghesquière was confident in the bag’s success and sent bags to models including Kate Moss and Sienna Miller. When their appreciation of the bag was revealed, the City bag became an instant success. Loved for its worn, vintage look, the City bag is feminine with a distinctive edginess. While you may have to hunt around for the earlier and limited edition models of the bag, Balenciaga is still selling the very cool Classic City Mini Shoulder Bag in black crocodile embossed calfskin and Classic Small City Shoulder Bag in black matte crocodile embossed calfskin.

The Balenciaga Hourglass

The Hourglass bag was first introduced by Balenciaga creative director, Demna Gvasalia, in 2019. Compared to the brand’s other bold designs, the Hourglass is relatively minimal. However, the bag retains an instant recognisability with its distinctive curved silhouette and oversized hardware. While the latest Balenciaga designs seem to have been embraced by a younger generation, the Hourglass is likely to appeal to a wider and more diverse range of people. Finished with a convenient flap closure, the bag is available in a number of sizes and styles, including wallets on a chain and top handle bags.

The Balenciaga Tool 2.0

While you may think a plumber’s tool bag is an unlikely inspiration for a designer handbag, the Tool proves us all wrong. The satchel bag was first debuted at Balenciaga’s fall/winter fashion show in 2016, as part of Demna Gvasalia’s first collection with the house. Made of calf leather and featuring a luxurious suede interior, the Tool 2.0 bag is available in a large range of colours. Make a statement with the bright lemon yellow or keep things stylishly neutral with the classic beige, black and dark red shades. With a shoulder strap and top handle, you are given a large choice of wearability options.
