Fashion Trust Arabia Hosts Star-Studded Awards Ceremony

Fashion Trust Arabia (FTA) welcomed top designers to its third annual award gala on Wednesday, hosted at the National Museum of Qatar in Doha.

Dedicated to shining a spotlight on the ‘Arab fashion world’s luminaries’, FTA is a non-profit initiative co-chaired by Her Excellency Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani and Tania Fares. In showcasing both up-and-coming and established fashion designers from the region, the FTA award night welcomed some of the biggest names in fashion.

Alexa Chung, Coco Rocha and Naomi Campbell were some of the VIP guests welcomed to the event, along with Off-White founder Virgil Abloh and Valentino’s creative director, Pierpaolo Piccioli.

The panel comprised of Virgil Abloh, Natalia Vodianova, Olivier Rousteing, Zuhair Murad and Alexa Chung, selected just six designers from 24 finalists to take home a variety of FTA awards.

Iraqi British womenswear designer, Zaid Affas, took the title of Read-to-Wear Designer winner for 2021.

Now it means that I can move my brand to the next level, which for us is growing our direct-to-consumer business model and working with the right wholesale client and setting our e-commerce, which is really important.

Zaid Affras told Fashion Trust Arabia

Alia bin Omair took the award for best Jewellery Designer, Moroccan designer Mohamed Benchellal was awarded the best Eveningwear Designer award and Mark Tangier Port’s Bilal Falah was awarded the Accessories Design award.

The Entrepreneur of the Year Award went to Jordanian-Romanian shoe designer, Amina Muaddi, whose eponymous footwear brand has been worn by the likes of Rihanna at this year’s Met Gala. Recently, Muaddi was also granted a spot on the Women’s Wear Daily and Footwear News’ 50 Most Powerful Women list. Muaddi’s increasingly popular footwear line, including her signature block-style stilettos, are available through MyTheresa, Net-A-Porter, MatchesFashion.

Each winner at the FTA awards receives financial support of up to approximately A$270,800 as well as an extensive mentorship program with partners of the FTA.
