Iconic Italian luxury boat brand Riva was the first boat builder to develop a hybrid electric boat and will continue a long-held tradition of innovation and legendary quality.

Celebrating its 180th birthday in June 2022 with a star-studded gala party in Venice’s Gran Teatro La Fenice, the glitzy affair attended by David Beckham and Dolce & Gabbana co-founder Domenico Dolce, Riva yachts can be seen cruising the sapphire waters of Portofino, Venice and Nice.

Beckham, Italian actor Pierfrancesco Favino and Ferrari Formula 1 driver Charles Leclerc star in a short film shot on the Italian and French Côte d’Azur. Riva The Persuaders! is inspired by an early 1970s action-comedy TV series starring Roger Moore and Tony Curtis.

The gala evening also saw the launch of the Riva Anniversario, a 10 metre wooden hull cruiser, built at Riva’s legendary Sarnico shipyard and slated for delivery in 2023.

Ferretti Group’s Global Sales and Marketing Director, Allesandro Tirelli flew in from Italy to attend the Sydney International Boat Show 2022 and talked to Iolande Skinner From The Deck about some of their recent releases as well as the future direction of the Italian luxury yacht builder.

The Ferretti Group encompasses some of Italy’s most important brands and builders including Riva, Pershing, Itama, Wally, CRN and Custom Line.

The Sydney International Boat Show was the perfect exposition for some of the highest quality yachts in Europe including an eye-catching Tiffany & Co inspired Rivamare 38.

Ferretti Group’s boats on display at the Sydney International Boat Show included four Ferrettis, a Pershing and an Itama.

Allesandro described the challenges for the yachting industry over the next five years, saying that a lack of stock, combined with an increased demand for sustainable yachts will prove to be the biggest hurdle for the industry.

Alessandro also spoke about the Ferretti Group’s commitments to sustainability.

The market is very interested to hear what we are doing and generally the yachting industry is doing in terms of sustainability. Clearly it’s not as easy as for the automotive industry because a boat is very heavy, it’s complex, you have to supply not only the energy to move the boat but the energy for letting people live in the boat.

Larger boats require more energy to propel as they are generally a lot heavier than a comparatively sized automobile and also constant power for onboard amenities, making it much harder to power them using stored electricity.

Despite this, he envisions continued growth globally for the boating industry as people start to see boating as a viable alternative to more expensive vacationing.

Although Ferretti deals mostly in the 25 metre plus market, Tirelli expects the entire marine industry to boom in coming years.

His prediction is that the 30 to 60 metre market will continue to grow over the next five years and Tirelli sees the charter market increasing exponentially as well.

Ferretti has identified younger buyers looking to purchase yachts in order to experience the freedom only cruising on a yacht provides.
