Finally, an Electric Car that Fits a Surfboard in the Boot

Just because a car uses cutting-edge electric technology, doesn’t mean you can’t fit a whole lot of stuff in the back.

Audi has revealed its A6 Avant E-Tron concept, an estate-style electric-powered version of its lauded A6 Avant, aimed directly at families, singles or young professionals who need all the boot space they can get, but don’t want to buy an SUV.

The car will make use of Audi and Porsche’s new Premium Platform Electric (PPE) architecture, with the option of a dual-motor all-wheel-drive or single motor rear-wheel drive.

The two motor concept will produce an impressive 350kW of power and 800Nm of torque, giving the concept a predicted 0-100km/h time of under four seconds.

The single motor variant will get to 100km/h in about seven seconds but the reduction in power means an increase in WLTP driving range to 700km, more than the Tesla Model 3 at 601Kms and the BMW i4 eDrive40 at 520Kms.

The claimed recharge time of the E-Tron concept is one of the stand-out features of the car, Audi predicting it will get to a 5 to 80 per cent charge in 25 minutes, that’s over 300kms of additional range in just 10 minutes.

Styling borrows heavily from the already-revealed A6 E-Tron Sportback with the closed front grille, black side sill detailing, 22-inch wheels and longer roofline, multi-link front and rear axles and adaptive air suspension mean it will be a smooth ride.

Audi has hinted at a 500 kW “RS” version of the E-Tron, but was tight-lipped about any release date for the A6 Avant E-Tron, with most spectators guessing the model will hit showroom floors mid-2023.

The electric car market is becoming a tight race, with many new electric vehicles expected in the next few years and competition is becoming stiff, will Tesla hold on to its lead after a head start?

Or will the financial might of established car companies like Audi mean specifications superiority allows them to catch up?
