Kickstart Your Health with the Best Fitness Trends in 2022

The #1 trend for 2022 is wearable technology.

ACSM worldwide fitness survey

The future of fitness is digital. According to the world’s largest multidisciplinary exercise science and sports medicine organisation, The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), the number one fitness trend this year will be wearable technology.

The trend comes from ACSM’s worldwide survey of more than 4,500 health and fitness professionals ranking 43 possible trends. Now in its 16th year, the annual survey features industry professionals from Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, Japan, India, Italy, Russia, Singapore, Serbia, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

The lead author of the survey, ACSM Past President Walter R. Thompson, Ph.D., said the improvement of technology is a net positive for the fitness world.

Tech advances have made it easy for users to collect important health metrics and work with fitness professionals and health care providers to develop healthy lifestyles and increase quality of life.

It’s no surprise wearable tech leads the way when you consider how many people rely on a smartwatch or fitness tracker to monitor exercise and sleep quality. The rest of the list represents a “fitness world that continues to feel the effects of the pandemic” Dr. Thompson added, with outdoor, home and minimal equipment exercise reigning supreme.

Here’s a look at the top fitness trends sweeping through 2022.

Wearable Technology

Health and fitness tracker are already popular accessories and according to ACSM’s findings, there’s no slowing down in 2022. The top fitness trend of 2022 is a helpful exercise motivator that tracks important information such as the number of steps, heart rate, calories burned and sleep time and analysis. The information can then be analysed and used to improve exercise performance and recovery as well as allow the wearer to stay consistent with an exercise routine.

Home Exercise Gyms

After a surge in popularity due to the pandemic, it seems home gyms are here to stay. Fueled by the need to isolate at home, there’s now an abundance of effective equipment and online classes that can be used from the comfort of the home. Home gyms can be as minimal or as elaborate as the user wishes with treadmills, bikes, cable machines and weights all popular with home work-out aficionados. The survey also reports this is the first year that home exercise gyms have appeared as a fitness trend.

Outdoor Activities

Another 2022 trend boosted by the pandemic, outdoor activities present a unique opportunity to promote bonding with family and friends that many have been lacking the past few years. The rise of group activities such as small group walks, group rides and organised hiking groups are all set to stick around in 2022 according to the ACSM report. Other popular exercise activities include outdoor sports – all emphasising people’s desire to exercise in the open air.

Strength Training with Free Weights

Strength training is an important aspect of exercise essential to muscular strength and endurance and also an effective aspect of weight management and a faster metabolism. With gyms around the world forced to close down over the pandemic period, many people established their strength training routine at home and free weights are a versatile piece of equipment. This year is likely to continue the free weights trend with basic training tools like dumbbells, resistance bands, kettlebells, body leverage tools, and medicine balls all maintaining a place in the strength training regime.

Exercise for Weight Loss

In 2021 this trend ranked at number 16 on the survey. Such is the perceived, or real, weight gain resulting from the pandemic that it now rounds out the top five. While it’s a common trend that often comes up, exercising for weight loss is always revived when people are resetting fitness, health, and weight goals such as early in the year. Weight loss guided exercise programs will be a popular trend in 2022 especially well-balanced schedules that combine exercise with nutrition.
