Architect Frank Gehry Crafts Louis Vuitton’s New Perfume Collection

World-renowned architect Frank Gehry’s latest project is slightly smaller than the Walt Disney Concert Hall in LA, the New World Center in Miami and the Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris – all previous designs of his. In fact it’s the size of a Louis Vuitton perfume bottle.

The latest collaboration between the two titans of their respective industries is Gehry and Vuitton’s Les Extraits Perfume Collection.

The five new fragrances from Louis Vuitton’s master perfumer Jacques Cavallier-Belletrud are housed in bottles designed by Gehry. The Canadian architect, known for his spectacular and often unconventional buildings, reimagines the classic Louis Vuitton fragrance bottle and introduces a custom trunk.

Bringing his signature fluid shapes and futuristic style to the pieces, the bottle’s curved design reflects movement inspired by Gehry’s passion for sailing. The design is an extension of the twelve curving sails constructed from 3,600 panes of glass of the Fondation Louis Vuitton building in Paris – the bottle resembling the thirteenth sail moving in the wind.

On top the bottles crinkled lids are made from shiny aluminium that Gehry sculpted into a blossoming flower. Completed with a stamped LV logo, again, the details are designed to echo movement with Gehry saying he went with a more sculptural approach.

I wanted to approach the project from a sculptural point of view. To bring something different to perfume. It’s not a finished geometric form, it’s just movement. Visual movement with the added interest of ephemerality.

The five beautifully crafted bottles are housed in an equally elegant Louis Vuitton case. The custom trunk displays the architects knack for creating a free-flowing feeling from static objects. The heritage-inspired trunk features a rounded but eccentric shape with scrunched gold metal details that resemble the bottle’s top.

The works of art continue inside the bottles. The new collection consists of five new fragrances Dancing Blossom, Cosmic Cloud, Rhapsody, Symphony, and Stellar Times with Belletrud reinventing the classic Extrait de Parfum – the purest and most expensive form of perfume. He commented on the collection saying he wanted to produce something that hasn’t been done before.

I wanted to venture where no one goes anymore. To reinvent the notion of an Extrait in a contemporary way. To bring it light, expand matter, and lighten things up. I wanted to deconstruct the very architecture of perfume.

Louis Vuitton also recently unveiled the luxury trunk that will carry the 2023 Rugby World Cup Trophy.
