Inside Lang Walker’s Private Island and Super Yacht

Lang has lived in the property development industry for over 50 years. During this time he has delivered over 1,000 projects which include national landmark destinations, and come out on top of two major recessions. His passion, enthusiasm and natural intuition for property development are undeniable.

Fully immersed in all projects, he takes pride in every development we embark on, using his acute eye for detail to create inspiring master plans; overseen from concept to completion. Lang has proven his visionary approach for troublesome projects time and time again. Taking on and transforming the most challenging of sites.

Not one to rest on his laurels, he constantly pushes the boundaries. In the past 10 years alone he has developed over 240 projects that have embraced cutting-edge design and industry-leading environmentally sustainable standards.

Lang personally supports a range of charities via the Walker Family Foundation, including the Children’s Hospital at Westmead and the Property Industry Foundation. In 2015 he was awarded an Order of Australia Officer (AO) for his varied and continual philanthropic efforts.

Building the dream

Lang Walker is one of Australia’s most successful and best-known property developers, having carved out a stellar career over the last 50 years with his Walker Corporation, but his passions often run to the water-based rather than on land. Having started his sailing life at the tender age of nine, when he was growing up in the Sydney suburb of Yowie Bay, Walker has never been far from boats and yachts, despite his many business commitments.

An avid One-Design competitive sailor, Walker also likes to take things easy at sea by enjoying family time on his New Zealand-built, 58.4-metre superyacht S/Y Kokomo, delivered in 2010 by Alloy Yachts. Last year Walker opened his newly developed private island resort, also named Kokomo, which celebrates life in the slow lane with barefoot chic crossed with luxury facilities.

Lang took a break from his R&R on Kokomo to talk with Ocean about his love of sailing, why it pays to know what you want from a new build project and fostering the next generation of sailors through philanthropy.

The Kokomo resort in Fiji has 21 beachfront villas with wet-edge pools.

Legacy Awards

Lang Walker AO was awarded the prestigious “Legacy Award” at the Boat International Media World Superyacht Awards for his contribution and philanthropic efforts within the superyacht industry, in a ceremony hosted on Saturday 19th of May in Florence, Italy.

The Legacy award is a part of one of the 20 categories recognised every year by Boat International, a renowned global organisation in superyachting, which acknowledges the most innovative and inspiring yacht designs and the talent behind these creations.

The elegant affair was hosted in Italy, in the city known as the cradle of the Renaissance, Florence, where Lang was recognised for his outstanding contributions and his extensive role in the design and construction of his superior and luxury yachts.

Each of the Kokomo series -three custom sailing yachts of 42 metres, 52 metres and 58.4 metres, the construction of which he directly supervised, have evolved simultaneously with Lang’s competitive sailing career and experience.

His innovative approach to pushing the boundaries was also recognised, an example of which is his building of a 58.4-metre sloop with a 130-tonne lifting keel and his commissioning of the largest spinnaker in history; as well as being the first man to put 3DL sails onboard a superyacht.

Lang’s passion for the creation of unique superyachts is also reflected in his multiple philanthropic efforts within the industry. The Australian Olympic sailing team and the youth sailing academy are just a few of the charities he supports. Additionally, when building his remarkable yachts, he has encouraged the implementation of apprenticeship programmes to teach the trades to the next generation of yacht builders.
