Matthieu Blazy Becomes Bottega Veneta’s New Creative Director

The high fashion industry moves fast and nothing happens swifter than a creative handover. The latest brand to make the move is the Italian luxury fashion house Bottega Veneta – announcing Matthieu Blazy as it’s new creative director.

The French fashion designer is currently design director at Bottega and will be stepping into the role following news of predecessor Daniel Lee’s abrupt departure from the Kering-owned company last week.

Leo Rongone, CEO of Bottega Veneta made a statement on the Kering website:

Matthieu Blazy is an extraordinarily talented individual, whom I am proud and excited to entrust with the creative helm of our luxury House. Bottega Veneta has always been equated with signature craftsmanship and distinctive creativity. Matthieu’s appointment will further enhance the modern relevance of our brand and accelerate our growth, while preserving the values that are at the core of Bottega Veneta.

The English designer Lee is widely credited as reviving the brand and setting its style agenda so his leaving was a slight shock to the industry. Blazy taking the reigns is less of a surprise. As Lee’s number two at Bottega Veneta from mid-2020, he’s been an integral part of the new direction with great success working behind the scenes. He’s an established a name in the industry with a reputation for being both respected and liked.

As a graduate of La Cambre in Brussels, he began his fashion career as the Men’s Designer for Raf Simons. From there the French and Belgian national went on to work at Maison Martin Margiela and Céline, before working again with Raf Simons at Calvin Klein from 2016 to 2019. In 2020 he joined Bottega Veneta as RTW Design Director working under Daniel Lee.

It seems the direction created by both Lee and Blazy will continue with Blazy at the helm. Francois-Henri Pinault, Chairman & CEO of Kering, said:

I am confident that Matthieu Blazy’s wealth of experience and broad cultural background will allow him to bring his creative impetus to the task of carrying on the legacy of Bottega Veneta.

Blazy’s first collection for the label will be shown at Milan Fashion Week in February 2022.
