Meet Australia’s Best Bartender for 2022

Up against Australia’s top bartenders, only one cocktail connoisseur came out on top in the Diageo World Class Australian Bartender Competition.

Hailing from Melbourne’s Bar Liberty, Nick Tesar took home the title of Australia’s Best Bartender for 2022 after battling it out in the multiple cocktail challenges held at Sydney’s Shell House last night.

Managing to whip up an incredible 12 cocktails in just five minutes —almost double that of the other contestants—Tesar was crowned Australia’s best, and will head to the World Class Global Finals in September.

“It still hasn’t really sunk in haha!” Tesar admits. “I am incredibly humbled by the opportunity, all of the Australian Diageo World Class bartenders before me are people who I admire. It’s an amazing opportunity and to be able to do it in Australia this September is going to be epic.”

Competing against finalists Samuel Cocks (Bar Rogue, WA), Sarah Proietti (Maybe Sammy, NSW), Eduardo Conde (No.92 GPR, NSW) and Kayla Saito (Black Pearl, VIC), Tesar was able to expertly craft a selection of cocktails that was simply too tough to beat, including a creative cumquat cocktail.

The world-class bartender tells me his all-time favourite cocktail, however, is the El Diablo.

“I’m a huge fan of the flavour combination and how the tequila works together with the ginger and creme de cassis. It’s a tall, crisp and fresh drink, great for any time!”

As for the impressive feat of crafting 12 cocktails in the space of five minutes, Tesar points to his extensive experience in service.

It’s all about remembering what you do each day, blocking out the noise around you, and focusing on being clean and consistent. I’ve been working at Bar Liberty for five and a half years now, and have been in the industry for over 10 years.

The Diageo World Class Global Final will be held from September 9 to 18 in Australia, for the first time in the competition’s history, with Tesar set to join 55 other finalists from across the globe. The competition will coincide with the 2022 World Class Cocktail Festival, which will see Sydney come to life with pop-up events and collaborations.
