Rare A$1.4m 1957 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster up for sale at RM Sotheby’s

RM Sotheby’s is selling a Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster, one of just 618 made in 1957, for A$1.4 million in Monaco. And it’s unlikely to stick around, the Mercedes-Benz model is a popular piece with car enthusiasts.

This sale comes on the back of a string of Mercedes-Benz 300 SL sales over the past few years. A 1958 model fetched over A$1.18 million at RM Sothebys in Germany in 2020. This year another 1957 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster sold at an RM Sothebys auction in America for over A$2.25 million in January.

First unveiled as a prototype at the Geneva motor show in May 1956, Mercedes-Benz introduced the first production example of the Roadster at the Geneva Salon in May 1957 as a replacement for the 300 SL Coupe. The new model featured conventional doors, rectifying previous exit and entry problems with the gullwing doors of the Coupe, and a convertible top.

The new owner of this immaculate version of the car will reap the benefits of a high-quality, 10-year restoration completed in 2017. Under the hood, the Mercedes is fitted with its original M198 inline six-cylinder engine delivering 240hp albeit with a full engine rebuild.

The extensive restoration includes a gearbox rebuild of the original four-speed manual transmission as well as a braking system overhaul. Despite being more than 60 years old, the 1957 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster has just over 100,000 km on the odometer.

On the outside, the paintwork is finished in the correct factory colours of silver with a red convertible top over a red leather interior. The last owner also commissioned a set of fitted luggage for the boot. The car therefore comes with a set of period-correct style of luggage originally offered by Mercedes-Benz, a tool kit and a spare wheel.

Believed to have spent most of its life in the Bordeaux region of France, the Mercedes-Benz has lived through just six ownerships since new with single ownership from 1957 to 1991. With the 300 SL Roadster hailed as one of the great cars of the 1950s, this stunning example is likely to gain wide interest with car aficionados.
