Princess Diana

Almost 40 years ago, the 1981 royal wedding of Prince Charles and Princess Diana brought the world to a standstill. And while their matrimony was the talk-of-the-town, so was Diana’s iconic wedding gown that stole the show. The stunning style icon stepped out in a A$160,000 custom-made gown at her wedding to Prince Charles. On 29 July 1981, Princess Diana debuted the dress designed by former husband-and-wife designer duo David and Elizabeth Emanuel. The silk and taffeta gown featured a flowing 25-foot train and an estimated 10,000 pearls.

Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge

When Kate Middleton walked down the aisle to become the Duchess of Cambridge, she was draped in a A$613,000 masterpiece. The classic gown, designed by Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen featured long lace sleeves and a full skirt. While her wedding to Prince William was 10 years ago in 2011, the dress is now estimated to be worth almost A$100,000 more than the original price.

Marie-Chantal, Crown Princess of Greece, Princess of Denmark

This designer wedding dress created by legendary fashion house Valentino originally cost A$317,000. Designed for Marie-Chantal Miller’s 1995 wedding to Prince Pavlos, the Crown Prince of Greece follows in true royal fashion. The stunningly traditional dress features long-sleeves with a 14-foot long Chantilly lace train and is pearl-encrusted. Nowadays the cost of the dress is closer to A$541,000.

Serena Williams

Who would have thought the title of ‘most expensive celebrity wedding dress’ belongs to sporting icon, Serena Williams. The multiple tennis titleholder, walked down the aisle in 2017 wearing a dress worth over A$4.9 million. The luxury wedding dress created by Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen comes complete with a cascading cape and sweetheart neckline. Today the dress is worth over A$5.2 million.

Dame Elizabeth Taylor

Despite eight weddings, it was Dame Elizabeth Taylor’s first wedding dress that became her most famous piece. The Helen Rose designed gown, from her 1950 wedding to Conrad Hilton (Paris and Nicky Hilton’s great uncle), sold at an auction in 2013 for A$262,000.

Kim Kardashian West

It is no surprise the fashionable celebrity chose a designer wedding dress from the luxury French fashion house, Givenchy. The elegant A$706,000 creation is a custom-made couture gown with long sleeves and a trumpet silhouette. One of the most expensive wedding dresses of all time, the 2014 gown is today worth A$775,000.

Princess Grace Kelly of Monaco

When the style icon Grace Kelly was to become the Princess of Monaco in 1956, her classic wedding dress was of course going to be something special. The now-famous piece made bridal history – one of the most elegant looks ever with a high-neck long-sleeve gown and full skirt. The timeless Helen Rose dress featured thousands of hand-sewn pearls, 125-year-old lace from Brussels, reportedly taking 30 seamstresses and six weeks to make. Costing almost A$84,000 at the time, the dress is worth considerably more today.

Victoria Swarovski

When Swarovski jewellery heiress, Victoria Swarovski walked down the aisle in 2017, she was wearing the runner-up for the most expensive wedding dress of all time. The custom-made, Michael Cinco gown, which is adorned with over 500,000 crystals is estimated to be worth over A$1.4 million.
