Pleats, Polka Dots and Plaid: A Look at Burberry’s Autumn Collection

For Burberry’s off-calendar Autumn/Winter show, there was no obvious runway and no front row. Instead, guests including Anna Wintour, Kate Moss and Adam Driver, filed into Westminster’s Central Hall to find dining tables laden with table cloth and silverware. As the London Contemporary Orchestra played, models filed out and stepped up onto the tables, offering a fashion feast for the eyes.

Showcasing both men’s and womenswear, Riccardo Tisci’s latest ready-to-wear collection was “a celebration of Britishness” and “the beautiful dualities of the country’s identity.”

Infusing the laid-back elements of high-fashion streetwear, including baseball caps, puffer jackets, sneakers and sweaters, the menswear collection offered modern takes on the House’s “heritage silhouettes” while keeping to Burberry’s signature patterns.

It was important for me to explore what it means to belong, how our roots influence our identity and how the power of community and togetherness is what truly brings meaning to the world.

Creative director Riccardo Tisci stated in his show notes

The womenswear explored both countryside dressing and dramatic eveningwear, bringing plenty of chic layered looks.

Pleated skirts and capes added a textural element to the collection’s looks. In terms of prints and patterns, Burberry honoured its classic codes with plenty of its archive beige check print, as well as green plaid and polka dots. As models posed on the dining tables, attendees were able to get a better look at thigh-high leather boots and a number of large overnight-style bags.

Along with plaid and polka dots, Tisci payed tribute to Britishness and the House’s sartorial heritage through reimagining the classic beige trench coat as an exquisitely tailored gown.

The collection, which was unveiled on Friday, follows the release of Burberry’s collaboration with cult streetwear brand, Supreme.
