Prince Charles’ Former Royal Estate Hits the Market for Over A$9.6m

An idyllic 37,312-square-metre country estate, once owned by the future king is up for sale for over A$9.6 million – and the next owner may have to be prepared for a royal visitor.

Although having not set foot on the land for nearly 30 years, Prince Charles apparently retains the right to go fishing on the property. A clause in the contract when the Prince sold the home in 1993 means the royal can still fish there provided he gives 24 hours notice.

A keen fisherman for many years, the Prince of Wales came to an agreement with the purchasing party back in the 1990s. And with the famous River Dart running straight through the grounds, it’s an ideal spot for salmon and trout fishing.

Aside from being a prime fishing location, the land also features a 19th-century Edwardian family home with six bedrooms, six bathrooms and seven living areas, a ballroom, a study, and a library. Additionally, the estate, built between 1893 and 1906 and sits in the middle of Dartmoor National Park, includes two, three-bedroom cottages and a six-car garage.

It’s the first time the pink granite property has been up for sale since Prince Charles with current owners making a number of renovations over the years. For A$9.6 million the new owners will benefit from granite floors, custom oak panelling, 120 handcrafted leaded mullion windows and a new 26,000 clay tile roof.

The sale is being handled by Knight Frank with the listing agent Hamish Humfrey telling Architectural Digest:

It’s an Arts and Crafts-style house. They wanted to work with that, and given the fact that it’s within Dartmoor National Park, they wanted to do work on the property that was sympathetic to the house and its surrounding, which they’ve done brilliantly.
