Record-Breaking 555 Carat Diamond Going to Auction at Sotheby’s

There are incredible diamonds and then there are diamonds that are simply ‘out of this world’. Sotheby’s recently unveiled a record-breaking 555.55-carat black diamond believed to have come from outer space.

The luxury auction house will put the one-of-a-kind gem, named “The Enigma” up for sale in London next month with no reserve.

It will be the largest faceted cut diamond of any kind to appear at auction.

The largest Fancy Black Natural Colour diamond in the world, it was listed as the largest cut diamond in the world in the 2006 Guinness Book of World Records.

With its own dedicated online sale from 3-9 February, Sotheby’s experts are predicting it will fetch in the region of A$9.5 million dollars, although that may not come in cash. The auction house is planning to accept cryptocurrency as a payment method.

It comes on the back of last year’s sale of ‘The Key 10138 diamond,’ another rare treasure purchased for a record price of over A$17 million with cryptocurrency.

While rare black diamonds, also known as carbonado, are only found naturally in Brazil and Central Africa, this one is believed to have come from an extraterrestrial source. Sophie Stevens, a jewellery specialist at Sotheby’s Dubai, told the Associated Press:

With the carbonado diamonds, we believe that they were formed through extraterrestrial origins, with meteorites colliding with the Earth and either forming chemical vapor disposition or indeed coming from the meteorites themselves.

The record-breaking diamond will be exhibited in Dubai from 17–20 January and Los Angeles from 24–26 January, before arriving in London for its dedicated online sale from 3-9 February.
