Skincare for Your Scalp: The Ordinary’s New Hair Care is Pro-Sulphate, Here’s Why

For years and years now, the one golden rule that has remained concrete in the world of hair care is to treat sulphate like the devil. So steadfast was our belief in the moisture-stripping effects of sulphate that whole haircare brands were blacklisted in beauty community chatrooms and salons alike. Subsequently, numerous clean haircare brands sprouted from seemingly out of nowhere, ready to sell us all-natural products with pictures of aloe vera or leaves on the front (known as ‘cleanwashing‘), promising to be free of the chemical that shall duly be named (and shamed).

However, cult beauty brand The Ordinary is set to tackle the misconceptions around ingredients like sulphates with a trio of new hair care products. When formulated correctly, DECIEM says contrary to popular belief, sulphates do not disrupt the skin barrier and in fact possess superior cleansing abilities to other ingredients. Using a four per cent sulphate concentration, The Ordinary will release a cleanser for hair and body, along with a conditioner and scalp treatment.

Maintaining optimal scalp health by protecting the skin’s barrier alongside effective cleansing and moisturizing is very important and we are able to achieve this with minimal ingredients tailored to target specific hair and scalp needs.

Focused on bringing a skincare focus to hair care, the Ordinary’s hair products are designed to nourish the scalp alongside effective cleansing and moisturising. The brand’s latest offerings are set to go on sale on March 8.

The Ordinary Sulphate 4% Cleanser for Hair & Body

Aimed at removing dirt, grease and product residue, this sulphate cleanser uses Sodium Laureth Sulphate-2 at a four per cent concentration to effectively cleanse the hair. Gentle enough to be used on the hair and body, this cleanser is step one in The Ordinary’s hair care routine.

The Ordinary Behentrimonium Chloride 2% Conditioner

Step two involves The Ordinary’s Behentrimonium Chloride 2% Conditioner, which promises not to give you a heavy after-feel on your hair. The product’s star ingredient, behentrimonium chloride, is used to reduce static and frizzing in hair conditioning products while also serving as an emulsifying agent.

The Ordinary Natural Moisturizing Factors + HA

The final step of The Ordinary’s hair care routine is this water-light scalp treatment. Formulated to improve scalp hydration without weighing down the roots, this milky serum is supposed to be applied to a clean, dry scalp once daily and ideally before bed.
