Skinny Jeans Are Officially Dead: This is the Style That Killed Them

Another day, another chance for a fashion trend to bite the dust. This time? It’s the downfall of the thigh-grazing, waist-crushing skinny jean.

Gen Z has been telling us for some time that wearing this particular style of denim is cheugy, and it appears we’ve finally listened. American market research company, The NPD Group, reports that the market share for skinny jeans dropped from 41 per cent in 2019, to 30 per cent in 2021.

While straight leg jeans, think mom or dad jeans, have seen an increase in market share from 29 per cent to 31 per cent from 2019 to 2021.

The demise of this cut of denim is thought to have been spurred on by the pandemic. As we all spent more and more time at home, comfortability became a priority – and comfortable is certainly not what comes to mind when you think of skinny jeans. In fact, straight fit, flare, and boot cut denim styles all saw an increase from 2019 to 2021 while skinny jeans were the only category to see a drop in sales.

But we can’t place all the blame on the pandemic. Trends are always coming and going, and it was only a matter of time before skinny jeans went the way of puffed sleeves and tie-dye. Of course, this means skinny jeans are bound to come back into fashion one day too as fashion is nothing if not cyclical. Until then, here are some of our favourite straight-leg denim styles to shop for.
