The ’90s Fashion Revival: Trends We Love

The 1990s was the era of the Spice Girls, Friends, Clueless and Kate Moss and whether you loved or hated the decade, the trends of the ’90s are back, in a big way.

Everything from babydoll tees to biker shorts and bucket hats is back on our agendas and fuelling our nostalgia for fashion defining moments of the decade. While there are some styles that we’re more than happy to leave in the ’90s, there are others that we’re surprised to find ever fell out of style at all. These are some of our favourite returning ’90s fashion trends.

The Sweetheart Cardigan

While ’90s fashion trends saw the cardigan usually worn with a singlet or crop top, the 2021 cardigan is typically worn on its own. This little number has been rocked by celebrities such as Bella Hadid, Hailey Bieber, Kaia Gerber and is one of the “must-have” items for almost every fashion influencer’s Instagram page. From ribbed and relaxed styles in soft blues and hues of brown and white – this is the perfect number to add an extra layer of style to your look. Wear it with a pair of high waisted jeans or with some loose-cut pants for a stylish spring look.

Bike Shorts

Seen on everyone from Sarah Jessica Parker to Princess Diana, bike shorts were a ’90s sportswear staple. These days bike shorts have been upgraded from athletic wear to more of a street style statement. Paired with everything from puffer jackets to blazers, bike shorts are often mixed with businesswear for a more elevated approach to the style. Most of the major luxury fashion labels, such as Burberry, Saint Laurent, and Alexander Wang are now making their versions of the classic ’90s fashion item, providing bike short enthusiasts with a variety of stylish and high end options.

The Slip Dress

Slip dresses have been back in fashion for a while now and it doesn’t look like they will be going anywhere anytime soon. From Kate Moss’s controversial sheer slip to the ever-so popular satin version, the slip dress undeniably defined ’90s fashion. While the satin cowlneck slip came back into fashion with a force, printed cotton slips are currently making waves over in the northern hemisphere’s summer season. Expect light floral prints and stylish maxi versions for this coming spring and summer.

Cat-Eye Shades

While cat eye sunglasses originally came into fashion in the ’50s with Audrey Hepburn and Marilyn Monroe, the sunglasses made a return in the ’90s with an entirely different look. The epitome of glamour in the ’50s, cat eye sunglasses were a little edgier in ’90s fashion. Today, they blend the two together and can effortlessly elevate an outfit that you weren’t feeling too confident about. You can find a range of cool cat eye sunglasses from high end brands such as Prada, Chanel and Versace.
