The Best Bars in Australia Offering Margaritas with A Kick

There are many variations of the classic margarita recipe combining lemon, lime, salt, triple sec and tequila only limited by the imagination of the bartender and the scope of the ingredients available.

There are many who claim to be the inventor of the citrus-tequila combination and just as many who like to drink it but bars around the world have created their own margarita concepts, some of them truly out of this world.

We have assorted a list of the best variations to be found in Australia, from neighbourhood taquerias to trendy waterside bars to nightlife hotspots, these are the most exciting margaritas in the country and the best places to drink them.

Hello José

Location: West Melbourne, Melbourne

Tucked away behind Victoria Markets near the Melbourne CBD, the happy-go-lucky Hello José offers some amazing margaritas to go with tacos, tostaditas and spicy chicken wings.

They offer a blinding five variations of margarita, the classic, spicy, frozen, orange and passionfruit and 1800 tequila coconut and pineapple, all delicious and all with good tequila.

Not too far from the happening Melbourne CBD, Hello José is your one-stop fix of Mexico in a city famed for its trendy bars and nightlife.

Tequila Mockingbird

Location: Paddington, Sydney

This legendary restaurant in the historic Paddington’s Five-Ways has margaritas so good, they named the restaurant after their flagship cocktail, The Tequila Mockingbird.

The drink lists Patrón Silver, St Germaine elderflower liqueur, jalapeño infused agave, cucumber and lemon as ingredients, all capped off with a salt & Tajin spice rim.

Often described as Sydney’s best Latin American restaurant, try some of their raw dishes like the Hiramasa Kingfish Tiradito which is a dish that incorporates a Peruvian-Japanese fusion known as Nikkei.

The setting is an early 20th-century townhouse that looks small from the outside but can seat a surprising 110 guests upstairs, downstairs and in the courtyard.

Market Grounds

Location: Perth CBD

One of Perth’s hottest new venues, Market Grounds sets the scene with a sumptuous selection of classic and contemporary cocktails in a huge, music-filled celebration of the senses.

The bar has a spicy signature margarita, the Spicy Senorita, which will make steam come out of your ears and propel you onto the expansive dance floor to groove along to your favourite hip tunes.

An icy fusion of Herradura tequila, chilli and cucumber the Spicy Senorita is just what the doctor ordered after a long day of bodysurfing at the city’s selection of sunny beaches.

Location: Melbourne CBD

This stylish tequila bar and restaurant is one of Melbourne’s best for authentic Mexican food and margaritas with five variations on the menu.

The standouts from Mamasita’s extensive cocktail list are definitely the mango margarita, with its addition of mango liqueur and a chilli salt rim or the tamarind margarita with its citrusy tamarind and pleasantly surprising smoky chipotle salt rim.

They also make the classics, the Tommy’s reserve margarita with its smokier, maltier profile from the use of Corralejo Reposado Tequila is a welcome addition to the menu, sure to satisfy the margarita veteran.

El Grotto

Location: Scarborough, Perth

Scarborough beach has to be one of Western Australia’s, if not Australia’s best beaches and this trendy Mexican hangout on the up-and-coming Scarborough strip is gaining clout as a premier nightspot.

El Grotto was named to reflect what the owners saw as a cave-like venue at the bottom of the Rendezvous Hotel and is host to live music and good eats.

Their tequila and mezcal menu is impressive, their Spicy Margarita makes use of in-house jalapeño infused tequila Blanco and mixes it with apricot, lemon and orgeat almond syrup to sip while watching the sunset.

Hot Tamale

Location: Darwin Waterfront, Darwin

Hot Tamale restaurant and bar boasts the largest agave spirit collection in the Southern Hemisphere to sip at while enjoying tacos, street food salsa and sharing platters on the Darwin waterfront.

This unassuming little Mexican restaurant was the workplace of one of Australia’s best bartenders, Anneliese Grazioli, who won the nationwide Patrón Perfectionist award in 2019 for her signature Sunburnt Margarita.

According to Grazioli the award-winning cocktail was inspired by the sunburnt Northern Territory and includes a Martini Bitter Apertivo and mango nectar combination that compliments the Patrón Reposado bringing out a touch of agave and sweet oak.

Bad Hombres

Location: Surry Hills, Sydney

If you want to get your fiesta on but you’re not a lover of meat, the friendly and quaint vegan-Mexican restaurant Bad Hombres is just for you.

Try the Pastor Mushroom vegan taco with cashew crema, pico de gallo & pineapple and sample one of the three varieties of delicious margarita, Baby Mango Ikyik, Clasico or Rosalinda.

The Rosalinda is our pick of the bunch, Olmeca Altos Blanco Tequila is used alongside Bhot Jolokia chilli hot sauce, watermelon, citrus and triple-sec to deliver a fiery punch of tequila, lifted by the watermelon sweetness.

Their cocktail menu is varied and contains some staples of the scene, as well as some fascinating variations and unique signature drinks.

With four margaritas on the menu, there is something for all tastes, the classic and Tommy’s margaritas are a good start to the list, watermelon and pineapple variations giving the selection a very tropical Queensland twist.
