The Emma Lewisham Effect

Once sequestered to the dingy back shelves of beauty counters, or hidden amongst farmers’ markets and niche health food stores, natural skincare has certainly come a long way in the last decade. But for Emma Lewisham, the industry still had further to go if it wanted to compete with the likes of La Mer or Estée Lauder.

Following the loss of her mother six years ago to breast cancer, Emma began to question everything she was consuming and how she could lead a cleaner lifestyle. But it wasn’t until a conversation with her doctor regarding pregnancy which revealed she was using a controversial skincare ingredient, that the seeds of her eponymous brand were sown.

Ceasing use of this product, Emma went on the hunt to find a natural alternative that would prove just as useful in combatting pigmentation. The problem? That didn’t exist.

“I tried to find products that were truly natural and safe, while still being efficacious and having evidence-backed results, but came up empty,” she said.

So, Emma created the skincare line she wanted to see on shelves. Three years in the making, working with a team of world-leading biochemists to create 100 per cent natural and scientifically-proven products, a line of skincare was born.

It soon became apparent that Emma was correct to assume there would be others seeking a natural luxury alternative. Despite launching three months before a global pandemic and its subsequent economic crisis, the demand has been overwhelming. In the first year, Emma Lewisham achieved numbers she wouldn’t have anticipated until her third year and its popularity continues to soar.

On a mission to be the world’s first circular and carbon positive beauty brand, Emma Lewisham is based on the principles of reduce, reuse and recycle.

Online customers can purchase refillable pods for their favourite products, to significantly reduce carbon emissions and avoid contributing to the annual beauty waste landfill. Once the external packaging has seen amounts of wear and tear, Emma Lewisham provides free recycling. During checkout, customers from Australia, New Zealand, the US and UK, can include a free postage-paid return label to send back the damaged packaging to headquarters where it will be correctly recycled.

As customers demand brands do more and more to reduce their waste and lighten their climate footprint, Emma Lewisham has gathered a rather impressive reputation as being a brand genuinely green at heart. Therefore it’s not hard to predict that the New Zealand label’s popularity will continue to grow in the coming years.
