The Fancy Guide to WA’s 2021 Truffle Season

Winter is almost here and so is Western Australia’s much anticipated truffle season. Running from late May through to early September, the state’s truffle season will see the harvest of almost 70% of Australia’s Black Périgord truffles. As the biggest truffle producing state in the country, Western Australia is celebrating this year’s season in a big way with the relaunch of The West Australian Good Food Guide’s Truffles Unearthed.

Hosting truffle inspired events, degustations, masterclasses and festivals, Truffles Unearthed will showcase the state’s best hospitality venues, chefs, wines and local produce. This is your guide to the unmissable 2021 season.

Dinners and degustations

Truffles Unearthed Launch, Il Lido

Launching the 2021 season, the Cottesloe restaurant will be plating up a six-course menu and an incredible line-up of West Australian wines. Il Lido chef Alessandro’s menu will revolve around David Coomer truffles from Manjimup and accompanied by a decadent selection of Western Australian produce, including Rose Malee wagyu beef, local marron and La Delizia Latticini burrata.

QT Perth’s Truffles Unearthed Wine Dinner, Santini Bar and Grill

Hosted in QT hotel’s award-winning restaurant, this event will see diners enjoy a four-course menu and canapés from Executive Chef Nic Wood paired with wines from Leeuwin Estate Wines. The menu will include dishes as pork scotched quail eggs and black truffle, Taragna polenta tartlets with mushroom truffle sauce and an indulgent chocolate mousse with dark cherry.

Truffle Dinner, Heritage Wine Bar

Heritage Wine Bar is collaborating with Coomer Truffles and Picardy Wines to offer a mouth watering four-course truffle feast. Using some of Western Australia’s best local produce, the menu will feature smoked mushroom, truffle velouté and trout roe, potato pavé, Black King Oyster caps with Stracciatella and a fantastic selection of Picardy wines.

Black Truffle Dinner, Cooee

Described as an ode to Western Australian winter produce, Cooee Chef Steven Finch’s six-course menu will explore the flavours of the Black Périgord truffle. Using Rose Mallee wagyu beef, Halls’ Suzette cheese and drinks from the state’s local wineries, brewers and distillers, the menu is guaranteed to surprise and delight.

WA Good Food Guide Special Dinner with Ben Ing, European Concepts

Former head chef Copenhagen’s Noma, Ben Ing presents his first ever public dinner in Perth. The seven-course truffle based spread will feature Abrolhos Island scallops grilled over charcoal, fish cured in truffle miso, grilled marron flavoured with bush tomato and truffle, pepperberry-scented dry-aged beef grilled slowly over coals and desserts made with the flavours of chestnut, truffles and whisky. The evening will also include an exclusive conversation between Western Australian Good Food Guide director, Georgia Moore and Chef Ing.

Nostalgic New York and Truffles, Ethos Deli + Dining Room

Ethos Deli and Dining Room executive chef Melissa Palinkas takes on the truffle season with a unique menu based on classic New York dishes. The East Fremantle restaurant will be serving a six course meal with carefully selected wine pairings in their intimate mezzanine dining room. With only 30 tickets available, you will need to book this one quickly.

Truffle Party! Chow’s Table

Combining Western Australian black truffles with delicious Chinese/Malay cuisine, Chow’s Table head chef Mal Chow’s menu is not to be missed. Located on Caves Road in Yallingup, this event is going to be worth the drive.

Dine by the Vines, Vasse Felix

The Margaret River winery will be celebrating the truffle season with a five-course dinner and carefully selected wine pairings. Designed by Vasse Felix head chef Brendan Pratt, the menu will pair rich Manjimup truffles with Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignons and Chardonnays from the Vasse Felix collection.

Masterclasses and Chef Demonstrations

Matt Stone, WAGFG x Hart & Co Top Chef Demo Series

Returning to Western Australia, renowned Australian chef Matt Stone will lead a truffle based cooking class as part of the Western Australian Good Food Guide Top Chef Demo Series. Hosted at the Hart & Co showroom, the class will begin with a discussion on Stone’s cooking philosophy, before leading into a truffle cooking demonstration and the opportunity to cook two of Stone’s favourite dishes.

Truffle Pâté Masterclass with David Coomer

Hosted at the WA Good Food Guide cooking school, European Concepts will host chef turned truffle grower, David Coomer. In this masterclass, Coomer will showcase his favourite product finds from his trip to WA in June and teach students how to make his delicious truffle pâté.

Truffle Cooking Class with Seth James

This much anticipated cooking class will be hosted by Seth James of South West fine diner, Wills Domain. With places for just 16 people, students will learn all about cooking truffles from the renowned chef.

Festivals and experiences

Truffle Kerfuffle

Manjimup’s iconic winter festival returns for its 10th year with plenty of long table feasts, cooking demonstrations, a gourmet marketplace and festival restaurant. Sample fresh truffles and some of the Southern Forest’s most renowned produce while warming up with a hot drink beside the fire pits.

Two Day Stay and Truffle Experience, Cape Lodge

This two day experience is hosted at one of Margaret River’s most luxurious accommodations. The experience includes multi-course tasting menus from executive chef Tony Howell, an authentic truffle hunt in the Cape Lodge garden, carefully selected wines and extremely comfortable accomodation at Cape Lodge.

Voyager Estate Experience, Voyager Estate

Hosted at one of Margaret River’s favourite wineries, the Voyager Estate Experience is designed to give guests a truly decadent truffle tasting experience. Beginning at the Winery and Barrel Cellar, guests can sample wine straight from with barrel and taste carefully paired truffle canapés. Afterwards, a four-course lunch crafted by Chef Santi Fernandez will be hosted in the Estate Gardens, showcasing the best of state’s black truffles and local winter produce.

Truffles Unearthed Closing Party, Papagallo

The final event of the truffle season will be hosted at the beloved Leederville restaurant, Papagallo. The Italian restaurant will be using the last of the state’s black truffles in their hearty pizza and pasta dishes. The night will start with a four-course dinner featuring truffle infused pizza dough, WA seafood, truffle arancini and tiramisu. Afterwards, the party begins with a DJ, resident mixologist and free-flowing food and drinks.
