The Ferrari 488: The Most Powerful V8 Engine in Ferrari’s History

No car company is as prestigious and world-renowned as Ferrari. The Italian luxury sports car manufacturer is behind many of the best cars ever made. Think of some of the most expensive cars ever sold like the Ferrari 250 GTO, and the 335 S Spider Scaglietti. Picture the insane hypercar LaFerrari or the classics like the F40 and the Daytona. If we were here naming fantastic Ferraris then we’d be here for some time. The stunner we’re interested in today is the Ferrari 488.

Replacing the 458 in 2015, the 488 became the first mid-engine Ferrari to use a turbocharged V8 since the F40. The sports car features in two versions the Ferrari 488 Spider, the convertible, and the Ferrari 488 Pista, the coupe. A convertible version of the Pista, the 488 Pista Spider was also unveiled in 2018. Here’s a look at this special car that can reach over 320KM/H and go from 0-100KM/H in 3 seconds.

Ferrari 488 Pista

The Ferrari 488 Pista is an engineering marvel. Powered by the most powerful V8 engine in Ferrari’s history, the engine can push out 720 cv at 8000 rpm. The 3.9-litre twin-turbocharged V8 has a 50cv output increase over the previous model, the 488GTB, and sets a benchmark for turbo-charged power units.

The engine propels the Ferrari 488 Pista from 0–100 km/h in 3.0 seconds and from 0–200 km/h in 8.3 seconds. The top speed of 330 km/h is staggering thanks in part to the latest in supercar aerodynamics. Not only is this car powerful and fast, it’s streamlined and efficient.

The sports car harnesses Ferrari’s racing technology and applies it to a luxury car designed for the road. The name, Pista means ‘track’ in Italian and is in reference to Ferrari’s racing heritage in motor sports. The Ferrari 488 Pista tames the many years of racing experience from the previous 488 Challenge and the 488 GTE models; it’s a race car that’s your daily drive.

How much is the Ferrari 488 Pista you might be wondering? Well, the prices start at $596,888.

Ferrari 488 Spider

Debuting in September 2015, the Ferrari 488 Spider is the convertible variant of the Ferrari 488. The two-seat, open top car features a folding hardtop that’s removed when you want to feel the wind in your hair.

Under the hood, the Spider has the same magnificent engine as the Ferrari 488 Pista. Performance wise the Spider only slightly lags behind its coupe cousin mostly thanks to the extra 50kg it’s carrying. Acceleration from 0–100 km/h takes the same 3.0 seconds, while the 0–200 km/h takes a little longer at 8.7seconds. Likewise, the top speed is slightly slower at 325 km/h but is the difference really noticeable?

How much is Ferrari 488 Spider you might be thinking? The Ferrari 488 Spider starts at $526,888 and that’s for the basic trim convertible. If you’re wanting to personalise your car then there’s plenty of add-ons available.

Coupe or convertible?

To choose the coupe or the spider? It simply down to your preference. The coupe is about $60K less expensive than the Spider, but you’ll be paying more for the top-of-the-range coupe. The convertible is likely to cost you more over time as well, as they generally depreciate in value more than coupes. If you’re looking for an investment then the coupe is probably your best bet. If you’re buying for the experience, there’s not much better than a convertible Ferrari.
