The Mercedes-Benz VISION EQXX Can Go the Distance

Designed for the digital and sustainable age, the electric VISION EQXX research prototype from Mercedes-Benz can, efficiently, go the distance. In April, the visionary EV concept car travelled from Sindelfingen across the Swiss Alps and Northern Italy to arrive in Cassis on the Côte d’Azur, all on a single battery charge.

Travelling at an average speed of 87.4 kilometres per hour, the test drive demonstrated VISION EQXX’s impressive real-world electric range: 1,000 kilometres on one full battery charge. What’s more, is that the trip through the Alps saw the concept EV arrive at its destination with around a 15 per cent charge; a further 140 kilometres of remaining range.

With an energy consumption of less than 10 kWh per 100 kilometres, the EQXX is a feat of efficiency for Mercedes.

The VISION EQXX is the most efficient Mercedes ever built. The technology programme behind it marks a milestone in the development of electric vehicles. It underpins our strategic aim to ‘Lead in Electric’.

Ola Källenius, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-Benz Group AG

The most efficient Mercedes ever built, the highly aerodynamic VISION EQXX achieves a benchmark drag coefficient of 0.17. This allows the car to more efficiently counter air resistance, which accounts for two-thirds of the electric energy required.

Featuring sleek lines and a curvaceous spoiler edge, the electric concept car is what Chairman Ola Källenius described as “stunning and futuristic.”

…it underlines where our entire company is headed: We will build the world’s most desirable electric cars.

Inside, the car is defined by the use of sustainable materials, including bamboo and vegan silk, as well as a software-driven approach to the user experience. Boasting a game engine and a one-piece user interface, the EQXX displays real-time graphics.

According to a press release, the interior tech also features “a more characterful, emotional voice for ‘Hey Mercedes’ places the conversation between driver and car on a whole new and more natural level”.

The technology in the VISION EQXX is set to be “deployed in upcoming series-production Mercedes vehicles”, or more specifically, the new Vision AMG concept car which was unveiled this month.
