The Most Expensive Weddings in the World

A wedding is, arguably, one of the most important events of a couple’s life together and some aren’t afraid to spend big on their special day.

Most expensive wedding dress

Valued at US$15 million (A$19 million), Hany El-Behairy’s diamond-encrusted wedding gown is the most expensive wedding dress in the world. The Egyptian designer first revealed the gown at his Cairo fashion show in late 2019, before presenting the dress to the world at the Oriental Fashion Show as part of Paris Haute Couture Week in January 2020.

Made of ivory tulle and silk organza, the exorbitant price is attributed to the hundreds of diamonds and gemstones attached to the dress and veil. The dress was ordered for the daughter of a wealthy Egyptian family and took over 800 hours of work to make.

Most expensive wedding ring

In 2016, Australian billionaire James Packer proposed to his then-girlfriend, American singer-songwriter Mariah Carey, with a US$10 million (A$13 million) engagement ring. While the engagement soon fell apart, the 35-carat diamond ring still claims the title of the most expensive engagement ring in the world. Designed by Wilfredo Rosado, the ring is set in solid platinum, bearing a 35-carat centre stone and two one-carat baguette diamonds.

Most expensive wedding cake

Some of the world’s most expensive wedding cakes have been purchased by the British royals. For their wedding in 2011, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were given two eight-tier fruit cakes, each worth US$80,000 (A$103,000). Baked by Fiona Cairns, the main wedding cake weighed 220 pounds and took over two days for an entire team of people to assemble. In comparison, Princess Diana’s five-tiered wedding cake cost over US$40,000 (A$51,000) in 1981.

Most expensive wedding venues

A wedding at The Four Seasons Hotel Hong Kong can set you back up to US$2 million (A$2.5 million). The hotel’s all-inclusive ‘Legendary Wedding Package’ makes the resort one of the most expensive places to get married in the world. Close behind the Four Seasons is the Langham Hotel in Chicago, offering their ‘Ultimate Luxury Wedding Package’ for US$500,000, (A$644,000) and the romantic Belmond Hotel Caruso on the Amalfi Coast, with weddings costing well into the six figures.
