The On-Screen Story of Sunseeker Superyachts

When you think of luxury, superyachts you may find yourself picturing Leonardo Dicaprio’s character in The Wolf of Wall Street cruising in style. Or maybe your mind wanders to the Sunseeker yachts sailed by the British spy in the James Bond series. Either way, you’re picturing the epitome of luxury.

And, after one of the worst crises in the history of tourism and travel, one part of the market has thrived as business has boomed on a surge of orders. The demand for superyachts has rarely been stronger with rich tourists enjoying the holiday havens on the sea to escape the crowds and the threat of Covid-19.

And while those that can afford it, are buying up big – there’s no denying superyachts have long been a staple in Hollywood films used as symbols of wealth, status and luxury. And – what better time to relive some of the films which featured the finest in superyacht design.

There have certainly been some memorable movie moments captured on the decks of beautiful yachts and – it’s generally the Sunseeker name that comes first to most people’s lips. The range of yachts is the perfect partner for a charismatic character.

If it’s not the Sunseeker Predator in Casino Royale then it’s the 40-metre Sunseeker superyacht making a star appearance in Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie. Here is a look at some of the scenes where the stunning Sunseeker yachts made a splash on-screen.

The Sunseeker Predator 108 – Casino Royal

It only seems right we start off with another iconic British brand; the Super Spy, James Bond. The Sunseeker and James Bond partnership spans 10 years and four consecutive films; from ’99s The World Is Not Enough to ’08’s Quantum of Solace. This one in particular – The Sunseeker Predator 108 in Casino Royal leaves a lasting impression. Owned by the Bond villain, Le Chiffre, the luxury motor yacht first appears when it’s spotted by Bond right after he lands with a seaplane. The boat then reemerges again later in the movie.

Sunseeker Superyacht – Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie

If there aren’t two more glamorous characters than Patsy and Edina from the legendary British comedy show. It seems fitting they would find themselves on a Sunseeker yacht in their ‘Ab Fab’ film released in 2016. It’s even more fitting that it’s a 40-metre Sunseeker Superyacht; extremely fabulous.

In the film, they use the large but fast boat to flee to the South of France after an incident with supermodel Kate Moss. It then becomes their luxury hideout. Apparently filming on the stunning vessel was a delightful experience – the stars mentioned the experience in a later interview.

Sunseeker Superhawk 34 – The World Is Not Enough

The Sunseeker Superhawk 34 speeding down London’s River Thames, the scene that started the Bond-Sunseeker partnership. In 1999’s The World Is Not Enough, Bond chases the Sunseeker driven by assassin Giulietta da Vinci. Speeding down the river at over 60 mph, the pre-title sequence ends with the Sunseeker destroyed by two mini-torpedos beside the Millenium Dome.

You can now even hire the same Sunseeker yacht featured in the film for your own high-speed pursuit down the River Thames. The ride takes you on a unique tour of filming locations such as MI6, Westminster Bridge and the O2 Arena.

Sunseeker Superhawk 43 & Sovereign 17 – Quantum of Solace

The most recent depiction of a Sunseeker in a James Bond film comes in 2008’s Quantum of Solace. We had to include both the stunningly modern Sunseeker Superhawk 43 and the vintage beauty of the Sunseeker Sovereign 17 together.

The Superhawk 43 is another villain vehicle used by the bad guys in Haiti, a scene actually filmed in Panama. The scene involves General Medrano and his henchmen taking Camille but Bond rams the side of the hull Sunseeker yacht, thwarting their plans and saving Camille.

Indicative with the Sunseeker Sovereign 17 laid-back cruiser style, the yacht features a slightly less violent scene. The later scene sees Bond being driven in a vintage Sunseeker Sovereign 17 on his way to his villa in Italy. Originally built in 1970, the Sunseeker Sovereign 17 was fully restored in 2005.
