The Ultimate Summer Trend: Hair Wrapped in Silk Scarfs

“When I wear a silk scarf I never feel so definitely like a woman, a beautiful woman” – Audrey Hepburn.

If you’re an accessory lover or are simply looking for a way to jazz up your summer wardrobe, then why not add a scarf?

Silk scarfs are such an easy way to spruce up your summer look, without damaging your hair. The natural fibres in silk won’t tug and pull like hair ties can do and, let’s face it you’ll look like you put so much effort in even if you just rushed out of the door. Hair scarfs were a 90s thing, just like hair clips, headbands and scrunchies were – but how often do we see them now? All. The. Time. Scarfs are something different. They speak elegance and femininity while still being summery and playful.

The thing with silk scarfs is that they’re so versatile and can instantly add something special to your outfit. Anthropologie Style Expert, Caroline Anderson believes it: “evokes a sense of luxury with its elevated fabrication, but its versatility makes it an easy addition to any outfit.” At this year’s New York Fashion Week spring/summer 2020 catwalks, scarfs decorated the hair of many models at numerous shows.

The spark for New York-based designer Jonathan Cohen’s 2020 collection came from his California-meets-Mexico origins.

Before his show, Cohen recalled seeing a Mexican blanket patched together with the stars of the American flag. For him, the scarf was more than a trend, it represented his upbringing and two cultures colliding. New York Fashion Week also showcased designers like Kate Spade, Christian Cowan, Rag and Bone, and Brandon Maxwell’s take on the hair scarf trend. It’s more than just elite models who are styling their hairs with scarfs – fashion bloggers, socialites and ‘regular’ people are too.

Another way you’ll find silk scarves being styled is on your Instagram explore page. Boasting over 246,000 followers on Instagram is Melbourne-based fashion and lifestyle blogger and a social ambassador is Rozalia Russian who’s also adopted the hair scarf trend. On a daily, she’ll provide her followers with outfit ideas, style inspiration and cute photos of her two children.

While fishtail braids are beautiful as they are, there’s no harm in going that extra step to ultimate femininity and grace. If you have longer locks then yes, you have more hair to play with, but there’s so much you can still do with a short blunt cut, a high pony or a bun. If you’ve ever wanted to get more creative with styling your hair but don’t want to wear clips or scrunchies, then have some fun and shop for a few different patterns and colours because trust me, the hair scarf trend isn’t going anywhere for a while.
