Throwback to the Future: DeLorean Reveals New All-Electric Sports Car

After teasing a new electric sports car back in February at this year’s Super Bowl, reborn car company DeLorean Motor Company has revealed a first look at the reimagined ‘Back to the Future’ DMC-12 car.

The original automaker, famous for creating the iconic car from the 1985 Robert Zemeckis film Back to the Future, ceased operations in 1982 but was revived under new ownership in the mid 1990’s.

Now the company unveils its upcoming electric vehicle, the Alpha5. Available to the public on the 18th of August at the prestigious Awards Ramp at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.

We have been given the opportunity to re-imagine a brand that has meant so much to so many people from all corners of the globe, for four decades. DeLorean has touched so many lives and set the stage for so many memories … we are all now witnessing a new chapter of this amazing story.

Some fans may be a little disappointed – the new sports car doesn’t bear much resemblance to its four-decade-old predecessor.

A collaboration between the revived DeLorean and Italdesign, the new car is a far cry from the angular design of the 1981 original. A boxy format is replaced with a smooth, curvaceous shape, giving it the appearance we’ve come to expect from a modern EV.

One very important defining feature remains however – the set of gullwing doors.

Inside the contemporary feel continues, with an interior that DeLorean describe as a “balance between artificial support and human control. Intelligent intuitive human design and craftsmanship”.

A grand tourer inspired interior features four seats and is more spacious than you’d first think. The cabin radiates a minimalist aesthetic with drivers positioned in front of a streamlined dashboard, with a sizeable digital instrument gauge cluster positioned behind a steering wheel.

Expect all the modern luxuries via an infotainment system that’s housed in a portrait-oriented touchscreen sitting on top of the centre stack.

DeLorean is keeping under wraps exactly what’s going to be under the hood, with no specific powertrain details released. The company does however claim some impressive performance specifications including a 0-100km/h time of approximately three seconds and a top speed in the 250km/h region. The range is mentioned as 482km achieved via a 100kWh battery pack.

You can currently buy tickets for the Alpha5 premiere at Pebble Beach Concours d ‘Elegance Award ramp on 18th August and the Concept Lawn on 21st August.
