Uber to Add Planes, Trains and Buses to its “Super-app”

Uber has announced plans to become a travel “super-app” yesterday, saying it will add trains, planes, buses and car rentals to its app in the UK this year.

The tech giant won’t be providing these additional travel services, but rather allowing Uber users to book flights, train rides and car rentals in the app. According to CNBC, Uber “may” take a percentage of the sales made through the app and will be announcing partners in the coming months.

The pilot project aims to create what Jamie Heywood, Uber’s regional general manager for Northern & Eastern Europe, described as a “seamless door-to-door travel experience.”

You have been able to book rides, bikes, boat services and scooters on the Uber app for a number of years, so adding trains and coaches is a natural progression

Heywood also mentioned Uber’s plans to incorporate accommodation into the mix, allowing users to make hotel bookings.

The announcement follows the launch of Uber’s experiences feature last month. Called ‘Uber Explore’, the app has expanded to allow users to book live events and make dining reservations through Uber’s partnerships with Yelp and PredictHQ.

While Uber Technologies reported A$7.7 billion in revenue in 2021, the leading rideshare app only made its first operating profit in November last year.

For Q1 of 2022, Uber stated it anticipates reporting gross bookings of between US$25 and US$26 billion (approximately A$33 to A$34 billion).
