Utilitarian to Ultra Luxe: The Most Remarkable Walk-In Wardrobes

High design, haute couture and luxury fashion are now filtering into the typically utilitarian corners of the house. The home closet or walk-in wardrobe is far more than simply a storage space for your fashion essentials. The very finest custom wardrobes are luxury spaces, larger and more expensive than many houses.

The walk-in wardrobe is very much a statement piece, a badge of honor, Philipp Nagel, director and co-owner of the bespoke London-based wardrobe company Neatsmith, told Mansion Global. People like to show them off.

The most expensive, a 3,000 square foot wardrobe built for around A$682,000, is a three-storey masterpiece featuring a floating staircase, makeup station and champagne bar. Many celebrities such as Maria Carey and Floyd Mayweather also have luxury closets that more closely resemble luxury boutiques.

3,000sq ft closet

The massive luxury closet reportedly cost American socialite Theresa Roemer A$682,000 to build. She designed ‘the largest closet in America’ to resemble a small Neiman Marcus boutique. The three-storey custom closet comes complete with a floating staircase and a Champagne bar. It makes sense when you look at the rest of the A$17.63 million Houston mansion that has ten bedrooms, two kitchens and a wine tasting room.

Mariah Carey’s Luxury Closet

The pop singer lives a glamorous lifestyle so it’s no surprise her extravagant closet could easily pass for a luxury boutique. The wardrobe, designed in pink, gold, cream and white hues, features a designer dress collection, a separate shoe space and a lingerie closet. There’s also seating areas, chandeliers and custom marble flooring.

Chanel-Inspired Closet

Imagine stepping into a Chanel boutique every time you dress at home. In this A$27 million mansion in Florida, that’s exactly what happens – the master closet is designed to replicate the inside of the luxury fashion brand’s stores. The custom closet stands out in a sophisticated black and white palette, with glamorous chandeliers and Chanel merchandise. There’s even a ladder for easy access to the top levels of the walk-wardrobe.

Custom Air Jordan Closet

If the Chanel-inspired designer closet wasn’t enough, in the same Florida mega-mansion you’ll also find an Air Jordans-only closet. Nicknamed the “Air Jordan room,” by the owners, inside there’s an extensive collection of the popular shoes worth over A$136,000.

Closet with Hollywood Hills Views

The luxury closet of a 20,058sqft mansion in Hollywood, Los Angeles is as you would expect – incredible. The walk-in custom wardrobe is part of the 2,800sqft master suite and was designed in Lake Como, Italy then shipped across the Atlantic. The space features floor-to-ceiling glass windows that provide spectacular views over the Hollywood Hills.

Celine Dion’s closet

The Canadian music legend needs somewhere to put her 3000 pairs of shoes. The luxury closet, inside her mansion which sold for over A$38 million in 2017, features massive shoe racks and an area specifically for gowns. The diva closet also has a wall of drawers that doubles as a jewellery safe that can only be accessed with Dion’s fingerprints.

Floyd Mayweather’s Luxury Closet

The boxing legend clearly lives up to his “Money” Mayweather nicknamed when it comes to his luxury closet. His huge dressing room is designed like a luxurious menswear store complete with a walk-in shoe wardrobe. The double room is carpeted throughout with wooden cabinets and glass doors showcasing tailor-made suits, ties, belts, shoes and watches.
