The Eight Best Vegetarian and Vegan Dining Options Across Australia

Once upon a time, it was considered a culinary sin to follow a vegetarian or vegan diet, and near impossible to find a restaurant serving plant-based dishes. Fortunately, we’ve come a long way in the last few years with many restaurants and fine-dining establishments now catering exclusively to those who opt for a vegetarian or vegan lifestyle.

From Sydney to Perth, we’ve rounded up the best vegan and vegetarian dining options around the country, so you won’t be stuck ordering a garden salad for mains ever again.

Yellow, Potts Point

From the award-winning team behind Bentley Restaurant and Bar, Monopole, Cirrus and Ria Pizza and Wine comes this fine-dining vegan restaurant. Inspired by the European dining scene, head chef Brent Savage and his team crafted a plant-based menu with a focus on interesting and heirloom vegetables grown by local suppliers. The menu changes seasonally, but no matter what time of year you visit, you are sure to enjoy an expertly designed and delicious vegan tasting menu.

Two Chaps, Marrickville

In an industrial-style warehouse in suburban Marickville you’ll find this much-loved vegetarian hotspot. Each day it’s brimming with fresh breads and pastries baked on-site using sustainable and organic Australian flours, and the finest coffee. Three nights a week the doors are opened for dinner with an ever-changing (but always veggo) menu of handmade fresh pasta and local cheeses.

Smith + Daughters, Collingwood

If you like your tofu served with a side of rock’n’roll then Smith + Daughters in Melbourne is the spot for you. Shannon Martinez redefined what vegan dining could look like when she co-founded Smith + Daughters at its original Fitzroy outpost. Now, her new Collingwood mega-restaurant has done it again and has been named Melbourne’s first ever vegan hatted restaurant.

Red Sparrow Pizza, Collingwood and Prahran

This entirely vegan pizzeria aims to please, without the use of cheese. Everything is completely plant-based, so don’t let the “pepperoni pizza” with its “meat” made from organic gluten and tofu seasoned with the same spices that normally go into pepperoni sausages, fool you. While they use traditional Napoletana for their dough, the toppings are where their creativity shines.

Mother, Fremantle

The restaurant formerly known as The Raw Kitchen has evolved over the last decade and is now called Mother. The values of sharing plant-based food and respecting our planet have gone unchanged, and Mother offers a Mediterranean-inspired menu of handmade pasta, share plates and natural wines: all vegan, all gluten-free.

El Planta, South Brisbane

Regardless of whether you’re vegan or not, there is plenty to drool over at El Planta, an authentic Mexican plant-based restaurant where everything is made entirely from scratch. While the menu changes weekly, it’s always completely vegan (and often gluten-free) and features a range of tacos using ingredients like pulled jackfruit, or oyster mushrooms. Plus there is a delicious selection of appetisers too.

Grassfed, South Brisbane

The menu at Grassfed is not extensive, but what it lacks in size it makes up for in flavour. Every burger at Grassfed is entirely plant-based and lovingly crafted using only the highest quality, sustainable, local ingredients. They also offer the popular I Should Coco plant-based ice cream with all the sundaes toppings you could dream of.

Staazi & Co, Adelaide

Self-defined as a project with a message of compassion, kindness and sustainability coupled with really good food, Staazi & Co is a mobile food van and takeaway shop, bringing delicious Greek and vegan food to the people of Adelaide. The menu boasts traditional Greek treats like yiros, all made from vegan meat substitutes.
