Vice Co-founder Shane Smith Enjoys a Record Price for His Los Angeles Abode

Vice co-founder Shane Smith recently sold his prestigious Pacific Palisades complex for $48.67 million (A$62.8 million), setting a new record for the coastal community.

Smith has made a pretty penny on the venture after buying the property in 2015 for $35 million (A$45 million).

The stunning, ultra-private ‘Villa Ruchello’ is an entirely self-contained, 3.35-acre complex beyond comparison on L.A.’s Westside, situated on one of Santa Monica’s biggest residential lots.

The Mediterranean-style home, designed in 1932 and featuring 13-bedrooms, 13-bathrooms, and 14,000 square feet of living space, has undergone a multi-million dollar restoration, displaying meticulous detail by designer Kerry Joyce.

The thorough renovation carefully preserved the original details and Hollywood grandeur while incorporating the new modern advancements and imported materials sourced from all over the world.

One standout of the abode is a secret hidden behind the books in the spacious library; an onyx-walled speakeasy.

It has a storied Hollywood history to boot, with the compound having previously been inhabited by director Henry Jaglom and stars of Fleetwood Mac, in addition to starring in ‘Entourage’ and ‘Beverly Hills Cop’.

Soaring beamed walls, elaborate inlaid flooring, handblown glass chandeliers, and plenty of huge glass doors and windows to let in the resort-style grounds and views of the Santa Monica Canyon characterise the residence.

Four further bedrooms, as well as reception rooms and a catering kitchen, are split between the property’s two guesthouses. A large 74-foot swimming pool and complementary pool house with barbecue and wood-burning pizza oven, as well as a cedar soaking tub, bocce ball, and edible gardens with fruit trees, vineyards, and herb and vegetable beds are all included in the lush grounds.

“We had a vision of a Chateau Marmont–style escape with the dual ability to throw lavish parties and feel homey and secluded at the same time,” Smith told Mansion Global. “A sort of mini-resort with the best poolside living in L.A. and a vista from every window.”
