“Wholly Inaccurate”: McLaren Denies Sale to Audi But Will We See a Partnership?

McLaren has laid to rest rumours it’s being bought by Audi. The British supercar manufacturer and Formula One staple cleared the air after reports came out that it was in the midst of a takeover from the German automotive company.

The McLaren Group said in a statement on its website:

McLaren Group is aware of a news media report stating it has been sold to Audi. This is wholly inaccurate and McLaren is seeking to have the story removed.

The company continued to say they are always open to collaborations however;

McLaren’s technology strategy has always involved ongoing discussions and collaboration with relevant partners and suppliers, including other carmakers, however, there has been no change in the ownership structure of the McLaren Group.

The sale might not be happening but it would likely be mutually beneficial to both parties.

Rumours continue to circulate around Volkswagen Group’s interest in entering the Formula One division, a McLaren buyout would likely provide access to this avenue.

Audi’s parent company Volkswagen Group would also bring a boost in financial backing helping ease McLaren’s suffering from post-pandemic losses. The group “reported an operating loss of around A$91.8m in the year to December 2020”.

Falling under the Volkswagen Group umbrella would bring the British marque in contact with Porsche and Bugatti, and likely help ease its transition to electric cars through electric specialist Rimac. It would also add a second supercar to Audi’s books beside Lamborghini – having owned the company since 1998.

Audi is no stranger to partnerships having had a decade of cinema-car collaboration with Marvel. If you’re a McLaren fan, have a look at the Exclusive Daniel Ricciardo Edition Mclaren 720.
