VIDEO: You Can Now Buy David Bowie’s Superyacht With Groovy Pieces of Pop Art Onboard

Everyone’s favourite gender bending British music icon and legendary artist behind “Ziggy Stardust” and “Under Pressure”, the late David Bowie, used to own a gorgeous 39-metre motor yacht called El Caran. The luxurious steel and aluminium classic commissioned by Bowie, built by Benetti and delivered in 1977, is now up for sale for A$7.1 million.

The funky yacht underwent a major refit in 2020, including a brand new paint job and teak timber deck, with interiors revamped by Simona Lamboglia Architecture. El Caran was most recently chartered for A$127,000 a week, higher than the average for a motor yacht built in 1977 on the charter market, possibly due to its excellent condition after the modern refit and the fact it was owned by Bowie.

Extra cabins were added during the refit, technology and plant systems were restored and the yacht was given a new life. Effort was put into respecting the original vision behind the yacht design and the aim was to create a comfortable, modern and, most importantly, entertaining yacht.

There is plenty of space onboard for up to 12 guests in 6 gorgeous suites, all designed to portray the late music legend’s eclectic style. Flashes of fluorescent colour jump out from mahogany finishes and all cabins include a huge TV, DVD player and ensuite bathrooms with bathtubs. There is also ample space for 7 crew members.

A characteristically weird surrealist painting hangs over the large dining table in the cavernous saloon and guest cabins are outfitted with retro-style, 60s inspired furniture. The thin white duke’s fingerprints are all over the interior design and this deck is home to a luxurious full-beam master suite.

The aft deck opens out into a wide sundeck and includes an al fresco dining area which can seat 10 guests. It is easy to imagine David Bowie sauntering around the yacht, covered in layers of sunscreen to protect himself from the blazing sun in the exotic destinations frequented by El Caran.

With a range of 4,000 nautical miles and a top speed of 12 knots, the yacht has been regularly chartered in the Mediterranean over the last few years and could offer handsome returns on investment. It has been maintained thoroughly, achieving RINA commercial class standards.

Twin 824hp MTU engines have been regularly serviced and the vessel features a long, “canoe stern” full of sunbeds and loungers. There are amazing panoramic views from the sun deck and lounging area of the bridge deck aft.

The late David Bowie’s classic motor yacht, El Caran, is listed for sale with Fraser.
