ASX-newcomer, OD6 Metals (OD6) has kicked off the first round of drilling at its Splinter Rock project northeast of Esperance in Western Australia.

Despite delays due to wet weather and COVID impacts, the initial aircore program comprising 192 drillholes for up to 7000 metres has begun.

The maiden program is assessing historical drilling which intersected an enriched rare earth element (REE) saprolitic zone between five and 37 metres thick.

The target area at the project reportedly covers over 30 by 60 kilometres which the company claimed makes it one of the largest known clay REE target areas in Australia.

Infill drilling will be conducted between the historical holes on 200, 400 and 800 metre-spaced intervals to depths of between five and 50 metres.

The company’s Managing Director, Brett Hazelden said the campaign was carefully developed on the back of historical exploration and OD6 is pleased to be drilling for clay-based rare earths.

Drilling is anticipated to be finished by late October and OD6 expects assays to start flowing through in quarter four of this year, depending on lab processing times.

OD6 shares were trading grey at 18 cents at 2:21 pm AEST.
