Wide Open Agriculture (WOA) has planted the summer trial crop of industrial hemp in the Shire of Pingerup located in Western Australia.

The trial site is a component of a State-wide trial supported by the Western Australian Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD).

HempGro, Western Australia’s largest hemp co-operative, has also been appointed in the ‘Right Seed for the Right Region’ project.

“This trial is vital for evaluating hemp production to progress and potentially unlock Western Australia’s role in meeting the immense and growing demand for industrial hemp seed and fibre-based products,” Managing Director Dr Ben Cole said.

“The state-wide trial will offer WOA and our research partners first-hand access to agronomic data to determine the most suitable industrial hemp seed varieties for WA’s climatic and soil conditions,” he added.

Hemp, oat-based products, and lupin (yellow legume seeds) products have been identified as potential plant-based food and beverages to be distributed and marketed on WOA’s customer-direct sales platform, Dirty Clean Food website.

In August, WOA launched its online food brand which allows customers to buy healthy meat online.

The website not only allows customers to purchase an exclusive range of regeneratively grown and grass-fed beef and lamb, it also offers next day delivery.

At the time, Ben was pleased with the launch of the website which allows customers to “connect consumers to farmers who are committed to regenerative practices that rehabilitate and enhance the entire ecosystem of the land”.

The industrial hemp trial and data analysis is planned to be completed in the first quarter of 2020.

Shares in Wide Open Agriculture are remaining steady, with shares priced at 12.5 cents apiece in a $8.822 million market cap.
