Alliance Aviation (AQZ) has signed a five-year contract extension for BHP’s Olympic Dam operations.

This extension will see the company continue to operate charter flights for the Olympic Dam mine and services for the local community of Roxby Downs.

The Olympic Dam mine lies 560 kilometres north of Adelaide in South Australia and is one of the world’s most significant copper, gold, silver and uranium deposits.

It is made up of both underground and surface operations and runs a fully integrated processing facility.

Alliance has been servicing Olympic Dam and Roxby Downs since 2007, and if the full five years are completed then operations will have been running for at least 19 years.

This extension will see the introduction of a Fokker 100 jet aircraft and a 100 passenger seat aircraft to coincide with the upgrades that are currently underway at the airport.

These upgrades are scheduled to be complete in February 2021.

“Alliance is delighted to be in a position to provide jet services into Roxby Downs. Passengers will enjoy a smoother, quieter and, more importantly, a quicker flight between Adelaide and Roxby Downs with a reduction of 20 minutes or 25 per cent,” CEO Lee Schofield said.

“Since our first service into Olympic Dam in 2007, we have safely transported in excess of one million passengers with industry-leading, on-time performance throughout the past 14 years,” he added.

Alliance is down a slight 0.87 per cent on the market with shares trading for $3.40 each at 3:12 pm AEDT.
