Altech Chemicals (ATC) has commenced testing the performance of batteries coated in high purity alumina via its ATC coating technology.

The announcement follows Altech’s successful demonstration of its alumina coating technology’s ability to coat graphite particles within lithium-ion batteries with a nanolayer of high purity alumina.

Tests have demonstrated that alumina coated graphite particles have the potential to measurably increase battery energy retention, extend battery life and improve overall battery performance.

Altech’s findings from December 2020 show the company’s technology
is able to deposit a uniform and consistent layer of alumina — approximately two nanometres thick — onto anode grade graphite particles.

Now that Altech has determined the graphite coating is possible, the new round of testing is set to establish the effectiveness of this practice in an initial battery test trial.

As part of these tests, a batch of electrodes has been produced using non-coated standard anode grade graphite particles, which will act as the control group, against a separate batch of electrodes was produced using Altech’s coating technology.

In a broader context, the tests represent an important step towards demonstrating the potential advantages of lithium-ion battery life when coated with graphite particles via Altech’s process.

Results of the testing program are set to be reported as and when they become available, with further testing to follow according to the company.

Investors appear to have responded favourably to the announcement, with Altech shares up a stellar 24.5 per cent trading at 6.1 cents each at 3:23 pm AEDT.
