The 877-hectare property of Holden’s long-running Lang Lang proving station south of Melbourne has been placed for sale.
The historic location, which was purchased by Vietnamese automobile company VinFast from General Motors in 2020, played a vital part in the creation of six decades of Holden cars beginning in 1958.
GM also used it to test automobiles from its American brands, Cadillac and Chevrolet.
Following VinFast’s decision to discontinue operations in Australia, the Lang Lang facility is being offered for sale with empty possession, with CBRE’s Dean Hunt and Stephen Adgemis hired to lead the campaign.
The listing follows a shift in strategy for VinFast, an emerging electric vehicle manufacturer.
“Due to unexpected situations brought about by COVID-19, we have to relocate our operation back to Vietnam to ensure product development progress,” a representative from VinFast said.
“In the long-term future, VinFast still considers Australia as one of its strategic markets.”
The proving ground was designed to recreate Australia’s distinct and diverse circumstances across 44 kilometres of test tracks, including paved and unsealed roads, a 4WD circuit, and a banked, high-speed oval.
“The Lang Lang proving ground is one of the most-advanced facilities of its type in the world, with an expansive road network and improvements including a dedicated emissions-testing facility,” Mr Adgemis said.
“It holds a unique place in Australian motoring history, and the fundamentals that made it so successful for General Motors and Holden, and attracted VinFast to the property, still ring true.
“As an expansive site within a high-density employment catchment area, it offers considerable potential.”
A total of 11,920sqm of buildings comprise labs, testing, storage, and office facilities, offering an opportunity as a rare automotive complex of its kind in the Asia Pacific area.
The property is located around one hour southeast of Melbourne’s CBD, right off the Bass Highway between the townships of Lang Lang and Grantville.
