Metal Hawk (MHK) shares have skyrocketed today on reports of massive nickel sulphide mineralisation at the company’s Berehaven Nickel Project in Western Australia.

The explorer used portable-XRF analyses of reverse circulation (RC) drill chips to confirm the high-grade tenor, which it said was typical of Kambalda-style komatiite-hosted nickel deposits.

The chips hailed from three RC holes drilled for 485 metres at the Commodore nickel deposit, five kilometres north of the Blair Nickel Mine, which targeted anomalous end-of-hole nickel-copper-platinum group element geochemistry intersected during air core drilling back in May.

Accordingly MHK, one of the holes hit two metres of massive and semi-massive nickel sulphide mineralisation from 144 metres to 146 metres, and directly beneath 12 metres of intensely weathered gossanous ultramafic rocks, at the interpreted basal contact with footwall felsic rocks.

The company also pointed to thick cover and extreme weathering of underlying bedrock as obstacles preventing the effectiveness of surface electromagnetic surveys of the Commodore prospect.

Meanwhile the other ultramafic horizon, where the remaining two RC holes intersected the target zone, was reported as being intensely weathered with no observable sulphides. However both holes are slated to provide a platform for downhole electromagnetics (DHEM).

Metal Hawk Managing Director Will Belbin commented on the discoveries.

“This is a fantastic result from Metal Hawk’s first RC drilling program that has confirmed our belief in the potential for massive nickel sulphide discoveries to be made on this exciting and under-explored project,” he said.

“We look forward to ramping up our nickel sulphide exploration at Berehaven and plans for diamond drilling are well underway.”

All three RC holes have reportedly been cased with PVC and will now be tested with DHEM to identify the strongest conductive zones and help target follow-up diamond drilling.

Assay results from mineralised samples are expected in three to four weeks.

Metal Hawk resumed trading today after entering a trading halt on September 10.

Following its Berehaven discovery, shares almost tripled in price — up 197 per cent to 55 cents each at 10:51 am AEST.
