Commissioning is under way for Neometals’ (NMT) showcase lithium-ion battery recycling demonstration plant in Germany.

The Primobius recycling plant, which is named after NMT’s 50 per cent-owned joint-venture vehicle with SMS group, is estimated to process 50 tonnes of lithium-ion battery product a day, or 18,250 tonnes per year.

Broadly, NMT said the demonstration plant trial represents an opportunity to demonstrate the recycling plant’s capability to “safely, sustainably and ethically dispose of lithium-ion batteries.

It will also allow for the JV owners to make an investment decision on constructing its first commercial plant.

Neometals and SMS group have been co-funding the evaluation steps, which are set to include a feasibility study and commercial negotiations to secure offtake arrangements.

NMT said Primbioius has continued its commercialisation efforts with ‘Front-end’ shredding and beneficiation circuit construction complete and dry commissioning in progress.

According to NMT, the demonstration plant is permitted to operate at a rate of one tonne per day and is gearing up for dry and then wet testing.

Neometals’ Managing Director Chris Reed said he was excited to commence the recycling demonstration trial.

“This plant is a real showcase of German engineering and we look forward to proving our proprietary flowsheet at larger scale and safely generate product samples promised to our commercial partners,” he said.

Neometals shares were up 0.98 per cent and trading at 51.5 cents at 1:08 pm AEST.
