Renergen (RLT) is moving into the cold storage logistics market with a new zero-emission solution born from a partnership with a leading trailer manufacturer.

The LNG and helium producer has teamed up with Henred Fruehau to create an innovative concept which utilises the company’s LNG.

What it essentially entails is pumping the cold energy of the natural gas into the refrigeration compartment of the truck to provide cooling.

LNG already has to be stored at ultra-low temperatures and then heated up when its ready for the engine, providing an opportunity for the cold energy to be repurposed.

Both parties believe this concept could reduce combined greenhouse gas emissions by up to 96 tonnes per annum per truck.

It would also help lower the overall running costs of a truck using standard refrigeration technology by up to 23 per cent.

Commenting on the collaboration with Renergen, Eduan Naude, Concept Manager at Henred Fruehauf, said he was excited by the concept.

“This is a unique solution, and gives customers the potential for huge savings,” he explained.

The zero-emission cold storage solution comes as Renergen gears up to open a second supply route in South Africa as part of its partnership with Total.

In particular, RLT will supply its LNG at Total’s service stations along the N1 between Johannesburg and Cape Town.

“The opening of the N1 highway between Johannesburg and Cape Town and the addition of filling route for LNG is a major milestone and Renergen is looking forward to supplying LNG across the route in 2021,” RLT Managing Director and CEO Stefano Marani said.

Stefano said opening this route led to the innovative collaboration between Renergen and Henred Fruehauf.

“We look forward to rolling this cold-chain solution to our customers across the country and look to other companies globally to begin adopting this innovative technology to reduce the world’s global carbon footprint,” he said.

Shares in RLT have opened today trading steady, worth $1.10 a pop at 11:13 AM AEDT.
